Title:
increased power usage after upgrade from kinetic to lunar

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Hi

I have just upgrade and power usage is double or more under lunar.
Kernel version went from 5.19.0-43 to 6.2.0-20.

Running powertop, I see that C8 is being used with 5.19 but 6.2 does
not go to a higher power saving state than C3.

I tried the Ubuntu kernel from jammy ie 5.15.0-73. It also uses C8.

I have also tried the 5.15.108 & 5.10.17 mainline kernels. Both of
these do not go to higher power saving state than C3.

All these tests have been run on the same partition ie. only the
  kernel version has changed.

Laptop is a HP 15s-fq4011TU 11th Gen Intel with Tiger Lake Iris Xe
  graphics.

  So it seems to me:
  1) Ubuntu has applied a patch to the mainline kernel that improves power
saving in 5.15 and 5.19
  2) This patch either hasn't been applied to 6.2 or no longer works.

Could you pls let me know what other info you need or what I could
  look at next?

  Thanks

Confirm that 6.2.0-34.34 can reach package C8

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2027848] Re: Soft-lockup caused by snd_hda_intel

2023-09-02 Thread brett hassall
Using Ubuntu 6.5.0-2.2 kernel as it is most likely to write the journal
after a lockup, I turned on some audio debug and saw this:

cold boot (all entries below have the same timestamp)
  jammy kernel: snd_sof_intel_hda:hda_codec_probe: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl
:00:1f.3: HDA codec #0 probed OK: response: 10ec0236
  jammy kernel: snd_sof_intel_hda:request_codec_module: hdaudio ehdaudio0D0:
loading codec module: hdaudio:v10EC0236r0012a01
  jammy kernel: snd_sof_intel_hda:hda_codec_probe: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl
:00:1f.3: HDA codec #2 probed OK: response: 80862812
  jammy kernel: snd_sof_intel_hda:request_codec_module: hdaudio ehdaudio0D2:
loading codec module: hdaudio:v80862812r0010a01

warm boot
  jammy kernel: snd_sof_intel_hda:hda_codec_probe: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl
:00:1f.3: HDA codec #0 probed OK: response: fe05

jammy kernel: watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#2 stuck for 26s!
[kworker/2:1:92]

So it seems the HDA codec probe should return a PCI ID and for some
reason after a warm boot it does not.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2027848] Re: Soft-lockup caused by snd_hda_intel

2023-09-02 Thread brett hassall
I tested before rebooting by using the following commands:
  sudo rmmod snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl
  sudo rmmod snd_sof_intel_hda_common
  sudo rmmod snd_hda_intel
  sudo rmmod snd_intel_dspcfg
  sudo modprobe snd_intel_dspcfg dsp_driver=1
  sudo modprobe snd_sof_intel_hda_common
  sudo modprobe snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl
  sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
After un-muting the output, a video played ok in vlc without any other changes.

To persist the change I created a conf file in /etc/modprobe.d and ran sudo
update-initramfs -k all -u.
After a cold boot, a video played ok in vlc. After a warm boot, I saw lockups.

This was using 5.15.0-82.

I see that commit "wifi: rtw88: correct PS calculation for
SUPPORTS_DYNAMIC_PS" has been picked up in the update to upstream stable
6.1.34 and is in the master-next branch of the lunar git repo. i'll test
when the next kernel is built.

Title:
increased power usage after upgrade from kinetic to lunar

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

  Thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2027848] Re: Soft-lockup caused by snd_hda_intel

2023-07-15 Thread brett hassall
I happen to have Lunar partition available (on an external SSD).

I booted Lunar on the same HP laptop and then did a restart/warmboot.
The trace is slightly different again so I've uploaded in case it helps.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 2027848] Re: Soft-lockup caused by snd_hda_intel

2023-07-15 Thread brett hassall
i am also seeing soft lockups related to snd_hda-core - also on a HP
15s-fq4xxx. My trace is different but it would seem too much of a
coincidence for the issues not to related.

This has been a day 0 problem for me. Changing kernels does not seem to
help. I have found that it occurs every time after a restart. If I do a
coldstart (ie poweroff then poweron), the problem has not occuirred in
over 3 months.

I reported a related bug on Eoan (5.3 kernel). Is there a 5.3 kernel to
test yet?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1846264] Re: iwlwifi firmware version: 36.77d01142.0 crashing on association

2019-10-17 Thread brett hassall
I'm seeing what appears to be the same problem booting Eoan (kernel
5.3.0-18, Dell Precision 3510, wifi pci id 8086:24f3 ).

If I hide iwlwifi-8000C-36.ucode the system will boot normally with
8000C-34 and wifi seems to be working ok.

The same laptop is dual booted with Bionic HWE 03 - no problems with
8000C-36

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1559805] Re: suspend not working with latest xenial and kernel 4.4.0

2016-06-20 Thread brett hassall
Chris

Is this still helpful given the move from xorg -> linux by Timo?

It seems more link a linux driver problem. I don't think I even have the
xorg radeon/ati driver installed. I did try installing it to see if it
helped but the suspend would still hang.

Thanks
