[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1527444] Re: Intel 7260 Wifi not working on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-02-22 Thread brianM
Further to my comments #23 above, I have now found that this card is
working well. I was initially fooled by the bitrate going to 1mb/s
whenever there is no data transfer. When data is moving it reaches
around 200mb/s (n type AP) and stays there. I have not seen this
behaviour with other wifi cards which seem to display a constant bitrate
regardless of what's going on.

It seems to be loading a default/fallback firmware that works well but
is still missing out on the direct load - see below

brian@lap2u1510:~$ dmesg |grep iwlwifi

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1527444] Re: Intel 7260 Wifi not working on Ubuntu 15.10

2016-02-16 Thread brianM
Installed this card on my laptop with current u15.10 and I get very poor
performance. Tried 15.04 with same result.

Dmesg says
iwlwifi :07:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7260-15.ucode failed
with error -2
iwlwifi :07:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7260-14.ucode failed
with error -2

My /lib/firmware only has up to version 13

Intel site says this kernel (4.2) needs version 13 but it is looking for
14 or 15?

Tried an archived version of 14, it loaded but performance just as bad

Looks like kernel needs 13 but will not load it

Brian

Still no change in current updates. Note this is a regression as this
wifi works in U12.04 using the wl driver (but not in 14.04)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252945] Re: [HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

2014-04-22 Thread brianM
Still no gui boot in Trusty release with the desktop installer - but
with some variations. This time access to a terminal is possible. The
workaround I used was to boot with the nomodeset parameter which gives a
gui and then do a full install and also install the fglrx driver. This
gives a working system.

[HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Tried to install U13.10 using the desktop installer on HP 15e010ax
laptop. Goes thru splash screen to freeze with a black screen with no
cursor. Unable to access terminal. Was using uefi boot with secure
boot disabled. This is a regression as U13.04 works on this machine
and has been used to gather the debug info attached due no terminal
access in 13.10. This occurs when trying to boot to live session or
straight to install. Appears installer cannot set up a satisfactory
default video driver for this machine. Note VESA: KALINDI works on
13.04 and probably should in 13.10.

  WORKAROUND: modprobe.blacklist=radeon

WORKAROUND: I installed saucy in this machine by a partition copy from
another working pc. Found that a recovery boot works and installs
video driver vesa:kalindi. Also installing fglrx works.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252945] Re: [HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

2014-01-06 Thread brianM
After some emails with Christian König he seems to think it is a ubuntu
problem. Not sure how this is fed back to ubuntu developers?
Also a workaround was tested successfully - setting on the kernel command line
modprobe.blacklist=radeon

Title:
[HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Tried to install U13.10 using the desktop installer on HP 15e010ax
laptop. Goes thru splash screen to freeze with a black screen with no
cursor. Unable to access terminal. Was using uefi boot with secure
boot disabled. This is a regression as U13.04 works on this machine
and has been used to gather the debug info attached due no terminal
access in 13.10. This occurs when trying to boot to live session or
straight to install. Appears installer cannot set up a satisfactory
default video driver for this machine. Note VESA: KALINDI works on
13.04 and probably should in 13.10.

WORKAROUND: I installed saucy in this machine by a partition copy from
another working pc. Found that a recovery boot works and installs
video driver vesa:kalindi. Also installing fglrx works.

brianM, thank you for commit bisecting this issue. One more thing before
this is marked Triaged, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If
this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
 example:
 kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon
next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As
 well, please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following
 tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
 understanding.

Bug description:
Tried to install U13.10 using the desktop installer on HP 15e010ax

cursor. Unable to access terminal. Was using uefi boot with secure
boot disabled. This is a regression as U13.04 works on this machine
and has been used to gather the debug info attached due no terminal
access in 13.10. This occurs when trying to boot to live session or
straight to install. Appears installer cannot set up a satisfactory
default video driver for this machine. Note VESA: KALINDI works on
13.04 and probably should in 13.10.

WORKAROUND: I installed saucy in this machine by a partition copy from

video driver vesa:kalindi. Also installing fglrx works.

2013-12-12 Thread brianM
I have got to a point where kernels will not boot on my laptop due to a
different issue (locks at loading ramdisk).
What I have now is

e748a38596932af8632448f35e8b2bba714ae03d bad
fffbdda4eee69f99b8c798d8eaca91c7e0513f08good

a4eeea4e530fee26918529eb1b36ae306095eef5 fail at ramdisk

Is it necessary to continue trying to find bootable kernels between the
good and bad

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252945] Re: [HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

2013-12-04 Thread brianM
Chris
It fails at v3.10-rc3.
Note that in the failed kernel tests it boots to a low graphics option
screen (after the radeon error in my prev post) and then a terminal is
possible. In the original bug, based on the Saucy installer, no terminal is
available.

Brian, alright, so now that this has been narrowed down between 3.9.0-7.15

would be best to switch to it and continue the bisect. Utilizing
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html Ubuntu
kernel 3.9.0-7.15 is based on mainline 3.9.7, and Ubuntu kernel 3.10.0-0.6

The problem is between 3.9.0-7 and 3.10.0-0. There is a boot to GUI in the
first with vesa-kalindi driver and only to a command line in the later. I
have attached dmesg output for both. The following lines in 3.10.0.0 appear
to be relevant

23.482258] radeon :01:00.0: fb1: radeondrmfb frame buffer device

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252945] Re: [HP Pavilion 15-e010ax Notebook PC] Unable to install Saucy

2013-11-27 Thread brianM
I have 3.11.0-14 installed in Saucy which freezes with the default
driver but works with fglrx. Also have Raring installed with 3.8.0-34
which works with the default driver. I tried the later kernel in Saucy
and it freezes. Can't see any kernels in between these two in your
references?

I also noted the following message before freeze in Saucy
- failed to find a backlight controller
which doesn't appear when using the fglrx driver

Tried to install U13.10 using the desktop installer on HP 15e010ax

brianM, ok so we have a Ubuntu kernel regression going from 3.8.0-34 to

 further narrow the regression down.

2013-11-26 Thread brianM
Chris
This is new to me so I need some help. I am to bisect using deb kernel
packages between Raring and Saucy? Not sure where to find these. Also if
using just kernel updates I can't test the installer so testing would
only involve seeing whether a default video driver can be successfully
installed?
Thanks Brian

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252962] Re: Ralink RT3290 not working in Saucy

2013-11-21 Thread brianM
Yes this allows a stable connection even using wpa. Performance still seems
less than W8 though

On 20 November 2013 23:13, Luis Henriques luis.henriq...@canonical.comwrote:

 This seems to be https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61621

Basically, commit 9483f40 rt2x00pci: Use PCI MSIs whenever possible
has been reverted upstream by commit
dfb6b7c109a7f98d324a759599d1b4616f02c79f and it is already queued for
stable updates (i.e. it should hit Ubuntu kernels very soon).

I've built a test kernel containing this revert and uploaded it here:

 http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1252962/v1/

Could you please give it a try? Thanks

Ralink RT3290 not working in Saucy

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
RT3290 wifi will not connect in 13.10 with wpa on. By removing
security a connection is achieved but it is poor signal and drops out
after 5-10 minutes. Trying in 13.04 results in a connection which
stays up even with wpa so this is a regression. Even in 13.04
performace is very poor (signal strength, speed) compared to W8.

Kernal is using the rt2800pci module which appears poorly equiped to
  handle this chip.

brianM, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest

please just make a comment to this.

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the
daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
 add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
 example:
 kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252952] [NEW] failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam16h.bin

2013-11-19 Thread brianM
Public bug reported:

This message appears when booting saucy on a HP 15e010ax laptop with
A6-5200 cpu. Same message in Raring.

The package amd64-microcode 1.20120910-3 appears in the standard
repositories but appears to be outdated and requires the removal of
major current packages.

Not sure if this message just means that this file is not available yet
as there are no valid updates but if so the message should be removed.
My observation is linux runs slowly on this hardware (compared to W8)
and there probably should be some firmware updates

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1252962] [NEW] Ralink RT3290 not working in Saucy

2013-11-19 Thread brianM
Public bug reported:

RT3290 wifi will not connect in 13.10 with wpa on. By removing security
a connection is achieved but it is poor signal and drops out after 5-10
minutes. Trying in 13.04 results in a connection which stays up even
with wpa so this is a regression. Even in 13.04 performace is very poor
(signal strength, speed) compared to W8.

Kernal is using the rt2800pci module which appears poorly equiped to
handle this chip.

During a test installation, after the purple Ubuntu splash screen, the user
is greeted with a black or blue screen instead of the installer.
Switching tty and back (ctrl+alt+f1 and alt+f7) fixes it.
