[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2020-10-14 Thread maurizio de santis
I've just logged in to share the workaround I've been using for the last
two years. I have a Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headset, I bought the
following USB key Bluetooth transmitter:
https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B01G3J1I5M/

No issues with it, audio quality is great either for music and for
calls, both incoming audio and mic.

It saved me from installing another OS for work, I hope it might be a
good alternative for someone else.

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/77dd0cb94c1713a8a12f6e392955dfa64c430e54

  5.3.0-46-generic - i915 - frequent GPU hangs / resets rcs0

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hi,

Since update to HWE kernel 5.3.0-46-generic I am experiencing frequent
(every couple of minutes) GPU hangs and reset manifesting as 2-3
seconds freezes of the GUI (other than the mouse pointer).

No particular triggers identified although have Chrome / Chromium
running with Hardware Acceleration enabled does appear to increase the
  frequency.

I have seen incidences of these hangs in jounralctl output using
previous kernels in the 5.3.0-xx series but they were very infrequent
(one or twice in a week of daily usage)

Exactly same issues here.
I tried live version of Ubuntu 19.04 with Kernel 5.0.0-13-generic and:

- I have no wifi;
- I have no sound;
- Sudo command stuck on terminal.

No one of these issues until Kernel 4.19.

Hi, did you try the grub options: acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native
Does it solve the fan issue?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1520519] Re: ASUS ROG GL552 TouchPad not detected

2016-04-27 Thread Maurizio M.
A quick update. By switching to kernel 4.5rc4 I get the touchpad
recognized as:

I: Bus=0018 Vendor=04f3 Product=0005 Version=
N: Name="Elan Touchpad"
P: Phys=
S:
Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-7/i2c-ELAN1000:00/input/input12
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse1 event12
B: PROP=5
B: EV=b
B: KEY=e520 1 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=66380001303

But with such a kernel there are video artifacts (with both native and
proprietary drivers.
I have no idea about how adding the above driver to an old kernel that does not
exhibit the artifacts bug.

Maurizio

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1520519] Re: ASUS ROG GL552 TouchPad not detected

2016-04-27 Thread Maurizio M.
Hi,
I'm experiencing almost all the above bugs by trying to install Linux on an
Asus ROG GL552VW.
I tested Ubuntu 16.04, Debian 8 and Mint 17.3.

The main issues are:

- Ubuntu 16.04: no backlight keys, cpu fan always at maximum speed
- Debian 8: no special keys at all, cpu fan always at maximum speed, touchpad
not detected
- Mint 17.3: no backlight keys, cpu fan always at maximum speed, touchpad not
detected

By searching around for a few days I found out that the best
configuration, at least for my laptop, is the following:

- Linux Mint 17.3

- grub optins: acpi_osi=! acpi_backlight=native

- create a file /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/80-backlight.conf
and copy the following code inside:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight" # use your backlight that
works here
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

in this way the backlight keys and cpu fan work but I still have no
touchpad.

I tried several kernels, starting from version 4.3 trackpad works but I
get video artifacts with both the open source and the proprietary nvidia
driver.

I can provide further details and logs if needed, just tell me which
ones you need.

Maurizio

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1471989] Re: I/O errors prevent installing 15.04 to eMMC

2015-07-09 Thread Maurizio Gobbo
Maybe the problem is related to VLT55 SD Card UHS - I Mode is Not Fully
Supported
(http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/atom-Z36xxx-Z37xxx-spec-update.pdf)
Try to search in BIOS if there is a eMMC 4.5 DDR50 Support (and or MIPI HSI
Support) option(s) and disable it. (sadly i didnt have this options in my
z3735f BIOS pc)

2015-07-08 Thread Maurizio Gobbo
Same problem, i've see a patch in the android kernel git that is related to
this problem:
http://git.android-x86.org/?p=kernel/common.git;a=commit;h=df2f12ff0c7985e1164ac197623ccb32e761ccc7

mmc: sdhci-acpi: Fix device hang on Intel BayTrail

Intel Baytrail has been observed sometimes to hang
if host controllers are using DMA while deep C-states
are used. Workaround that by specifying a maximum
DMA latency that will prevent deep C-states.

2014-06-12 Thread maurizio
Christopher, i was expecting an email about you answer, maybe I have to change
something in my profile.
Anyway. For me it works perfectly with the new kernel 3.13.0-29-generic.
Do you still want me to run ubuntu-bug linux ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1314434] Re: RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter [10ec:8179] (rev 01) - not working

2014-05-11 Thread maurizio
hello, I used 14.04 beta2 with kernel 3.13.0-19-generic with success.
The problem arises after the update to 14.04 stable with kernel
3.13.0-24-generic.
Then I am still able to use wifi booting with kernel 3.13.0-19-generic. I don't
know if there is an option for downgrading to that kernel version, as a
workaround until the problem get fixed.
