[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1752772] Re: r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

2018-08-03 Thread slumbergod
For some reason my wired connection in 18.04 suddenly stopped working.
Wifi was fine. I spend 24 hours trying everything to get it back,
including factory resetting the router, changing network cables, and
reinstalling Xubuntu many times. After fighting with Acer's buggy secure
boot system I managed to get 18.04.1 installed but STILL no wired
connection.

I tried removing the driver module and adding it back but still no
change.

Then I tried suspending my laptop and waking it up. BINGO. Wired
connection came on as it was supposed to.

I don't know what the bug is but it hasn't been fixed and on my hardware
at least Wired Connections are broken by default. Only after suspending
does it seem to fix itself. Hope that helps devs.

Title:
r8169 ethernet card don't work after returning from suspension

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Ethernet r8169 stops working after system resumed from suspend.

  [Test]
User confirmed these patches fix the issue. r8169 continues to work
  after resume from suspend.

  [Regression Potential]
Medium. The fix is limited to one device, all patches are in mainline.
The WOL default change might cause regression for users that depend on
BIOS settings. We can advice them to use userspace tool (systemd,
  ethtool, etc.) instead.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have noticed that the network stopped working on my desktop after I've
suspended the system and woke it up. On dmesg there are messages like:

  [ 150.877998] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready
  [ 150.944101] do_IRQ: 3.37 No irq handler for vector
  [ 150.944105] r8169 :01:00.0 enp1s0: link down
  [ 150.944180] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): enp1s0: link is not ready

When using Xenial (from a different install), this problem is not
happening. This is happening on Bionic.

There are only two ways to restore connectivity:
  1) Reboot the system;
  2) Remove the r8169 module and reinsert it with modprobe.

The motherboard is a AsRock H55M-LE and the Ethernet controller is:

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1601952] Re: Xenial update to v4.4.15 stable release

2016-07-12 Thread slumbergod
Can someone clarify whether the ubuntu mainstream kernel site includes
the patches. From 4.4.14 I had problems logging in (ecryptfs issues I
think). Then it the mainline server listed patches. Now with 4.4.15 the
kernel is listed again with patches to apply. I've never encountered
this before. Are we supposed to compile them ourselves with patches
applied now. Still using 4.4.13 until I understand the changes to the
website.

Bug description:
  SRU Justification

  Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
a minimally backported form of that patch. The v4.4.15 upstream stable
patch set is now available. It should be included in the Ubuntu
     kernel as well.

  TEST CASE: TBD

The following patches from the v4.4.15 stable release shall be
  applied:

qeth: delete napi struct when removing a qeth device

The problem below was NOT present in Ubuntu 13.04

In xubuntu power options, machine is configured not to go to suspend when
laptop lid is closed.
Once or twice a day, upon opening the lid I am presented with a black screen
and I am unable to wake the machine. The only solution is to force the laptop
to shutdown by holding down the power button.

On the one occasion the machine did wake (random key presses) it was
unusable...the mouse was so slow I was unable to use it to reboot the
  machine.

I have tried permanently disabling suspend and hibernate with hacks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323423] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-29 Thread slumbergod
Appears to be present in Raring, Saucy, and Trusty kernels so it is
clearly related to the unique hardware of this Samsung notebook.

What has changed is the behaviour with Trusty. In earlier versions of
Xubuntu the volume function keys didn't cause is state requiring a
reboot.

Now looking at getting the scancodes for the keys to see if it is
possible to reprogram them.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323432] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] machine does not wake up with lid open - suspend is disabled

2014-05-27 Thread slumbergod
Update for the benefit of anyone else experiencing this problem.

Kernel v3.9-rc8-raring works - no suspend / wake-up issues (final Raring

Title:
[Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] machine does not wake up with lid open -
  suspend is disabled

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU notebook

The problem below was NOT present in Ubuntu 13.04

In xubuntu power options, machine is configured not to go to suspend when
laptop lid is closed.
Once or twice a day, upon opening the lid I am presented with a black screen
and I am unable to wake the machine. The only solution is to force the laptop
to shutdown by holding down the power button.

On the one occasion the machine did wake (random key presses) it was
unusable...the mouse was so slow I was unable to use it to reboot the
  machine.

I have tried permanently disabling suspend and hibernate with hacks
found on forums but nothing has worked.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323423] [NEW] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

Samsung notebook: NP350E5C-A02AU

FN+F6 (Mute), FN+F7 (Volume Down), and FN+F7 (Volume Up) cause the
machine to become highly unstable requiring a power off holding the
power button in.

This did NOT happen in Ubuntu 13.04 so I conclude that it is a hardware
issue under newer kernels (one of many issues, all being reported
individually).

I can't see a 3.16-rc7 but I do see this one:

Is this the one to try?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323423] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] function keys cause machine to freeze

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
I am trying to get Samsung support involved. What is it that kernel devs
would need to improve support? source code for BIOS? a list of
specifications?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1323432] [NEW] machine does not wake up with lid open - suspend is disabled

2014-05-26 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-19 Thread slumbergod
With v3.15-rc5-utopic
-- wireless mouse was detected
-- unable to connect to my VPN so reverted back to 3.13.0-27-generic

I woke up this morning to find my machine had suspended to a black
screen using 3.13.0-27-generic. I am now almost certain the issue is
entirely related to light-locker and xfce4-power-manager and will not be
resolved until those packages are updated.

The issue with the disappearing wireless mouse on reboot (which seems to
be entirely random because sometimes it is not present and other times
is detected normally even when the *same* kernel is used) would be
Samsung's lack of transparency with their hardware.

If someone could tell me what the kernel developers need to include
better support for Samsung laptops I would happily try contacting
Samsung to plead for better support.

[Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I'm using a Samsung NP350E5C laptop and I've been having strange
issues. I gave up on Xubuntu 13.10 and went back to Xubuntu 13.04
until Xubuntu 14.04 LTS came out. I'd hoped that the strange issues
had been resolved but since doing a clean install I have been dogged
  by weird issues.

Here's what is causing me grief at the moment. I leave my laptop on
24/7 and just close the lid when I am away from the machine. I go into
the system's power settings to disable suspend and hibernation so that
closing the lid does does nothing. With the kernel that 14.04 shipped
with it was as though those settings were completely ignored. I'd
close the lid and when I opened it again, there was a blank screen and
I was unable to do anything at all, not even start an alternative log
in. The only option was to hold the power button until the machine
  ungracefully turned off.

I then applied some hacks I found on line to permanently disable
hibernation and suspend. I've also installed all the newer kernels as
they have been offered in synaptic. The problem changed to being
**intermittent** - my system would randomly hang when I opened the
  lid.

With the latest two kernels (including the 27 one that just came out)
it is now happening **more often**! I'll wake up in the morning, open
my laptop and there's the blank screen with no way to wake the system
  up.

I wonder if there is something strange with Samsung laptops and the
kernels at the moment. I have to add the acpi_vendor backlight tweak
to get the brightness working correctly. And for the first kernel
releases under 14.04 my usb wireless mouse would not be recognised
after a reboot -- I'd have to unplug the transmitter then plug it in
  again.

I'm still experiencing random system slow downs where my machine slows
to a crawl. Trying to move the mouse across the screen would take 5
mins in little jumps and starts, with no mouse clicks being
  registered.

  Looking on the forums
  (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2224455) I see I am not
alone and it has been suggested I try a mainline lowlatency kernel
which as of today I will try.

I am happy to try any suggestions to help resolve this because this is
a good machine and it was frustrating having to give up on ubuntu
13.10 and stay with the older, more dependable versions.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-18 Thread slumbergod
Christopher, I have changed kernel to 3.15.0-031500rc2-generic.
After reboot, the **wireless mouse was not detected**

I have changed back from xscreensaver to light-locker.
Bug #1303736 suggests that the bug is with the interaction between light-locker
and xfce4-power-manager settings.
Lots of Xubuntu users are affected.

I'll continue using this kernel until it something goes wrong but these
issues are starting the affect my ability to work on my machine and soon
I will revert back to Xubuntu 13.04, the last stable Xubuntu.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-18 Thread slumbergod
I had to reboot to a different kernel. I couldn't log into my VPN with
3.15.0-031500rc2-generic.

I decided to see which kernels would give me my wireless mouse back after a
reboot.
Tried 3.13.0-27-generic no wireless mouse detected
Tried 3.13.0-26-generic yes, mouse detected

With it working again I decided to retry the others again
Tried 3.13.0.24-generic yes, mouse detected
Re-Tried 3.13.0.27-generic yes, mouse detected

I just don't get it. It seems completely random as to whether the
wireless mouse is detected. No other changes are made between reboots --
it is just sometimes the mouse is detected and sometimes it isn't.

I'd like to say it is my system has a hardware fault but then it works
flawlessly with Xubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8.1

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1320554] [NEW] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-17 Thread slumbergod
Public bug reported:

I'm using a Samsung NP350E5C laptop and I've been having strange issues.
I gave up on Xubuntu 13.10 and went back to Xubuntu 13.04 until Xubuntu
14.04 LTS came out. I'd hoped that the strange issues had been resolved
but since doing a clean install I have been dogged by weird issues.

Here's what is causing me grief at the moment. I leave my laptop on 24/7
and just close the lid when I am away from the machine. I go into the
system's power settings to disable suspend and hibernation so that
closing the lid does does nothing. With the kernel that 14.04 shipped
with it was as though those settings were completely ignored. I'd close
the lid and when I opened it again, there was a blank screen and I was
unable to do anything at all, not even start an alternative log in. The
only option was to hold the power button until the machine ungracefully
turned off.

I then applied some hacks I found on line to permanently disable
hibernation and suspend. I've also installed all the newer kernels as
they have been offered in synaptic. The problem changed to being
**intermittent** - my system would randomly hang when I opened the lid.

With the latest two kernels (including the 27 one that just came out) it
is now happening **more often**! I'll wake up in the morning, open my
laptop and there's the blank screen with no way to wake the system up.

I wonder if there is something strange with Samsung laptops and the
kernels at the moment. I have to add the acpi_vendor backlight tweak to
get the brightness working correctly. And for the first kernel releases
under 14.04 my usb wireless mouse would not be recognised after a reboot
-- I'd have to unplug the transmitter then plug it in again.

I'm still experiencing random system slow downs where my machine slows
to a crawl. Trying to move the mouse across the screen would take 5 mins
in little jumps and starts, with no mouse clicks being registered.

Looking on the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2224455)

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1320554] Re: [Samsung NP350E5C-A02AU] Suspend hang with blank screen on lid open

2014-05-17 Thread slumbergod
There is no BIOS update. I am using the latest BIOS update, as provided through
Samsung's SW Update software (P09ABE).

In fact, the New Zealand Samsung support website doesn't even list any BIOS
update and most of their software downloads are only available for Windows XP,
which this laptop never came with. It is a Windows 8 only machine.

I am trialling the 3.14.1-031401-lowlatency kernel from mainline and now
the wireless mouse not being recognised bug is back!

Clearly, Samsung are making no effort to support their machines with
linux. What information could they provide that would allow developers
to fix these issues. I can't afford a new machine and I am not keen on
dropping back to 13.04 to get a linux distro that works without
problems. Failing that I only have Windows 8.1.

updates. Now mouse is not detected with any kernel, including

So it isn't just me
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-power-manager/+bug/1303736

I am just unlucky in that not only do have the suspend/blank screen bug,
but my hardware also gives me the disappearing wireless mouse on reboot!

Is it ok for me to change the status of the bug to confirmed if I was the
reporter of the bug in the first place?
Is this only affecting me? If someone else is using a wireless mouse and you
aren't experiencing this problem can you please tell me what mouse you are
using.

2013-09-09 Thread slumbergod
Sorry, Christopher. The bug report is very old and I am not using that release
any more. You can disregard the report now.
Thanks.

Title:
Can't reconnect to wireless network after upgrade to 1.25 unless I
  reboot

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: linux-firmware

With linux-firmware 1.24, I can reconnect to a wireless network by reloading
the following wireless kernel modules:
iwl3945, iwlcore, and mac80211. It isn't possible for me to reconnect unless
I reload these modules with modprobe (though even having to do this is
inconvenient).

Following an upgrade to linux-firmware 1.25, a reboot becomes
mandatory for reconnection i.e. reloading the above drivers no longer
  works.

As soon as I downgrade to 1.24 I can reconnect again after manually
reloading the drivers. This weekend I wondered why it stopped working
again and it turned out I had forgot to lock the version at 1.24 and
it had been automatically upgrades back to 1.25 in a subsequent system
update. Back at 1.24 again and it works again.

(No idea why I have to keep reloading kernel drivers to refresh the
wireless stack though. It is frustrating but it is certainly better
  than rebooting everytime.)

  Intel 3945 wireless chipset.
  Xubuntu Karmic
