about a week ago and my server has been using it since then.

Yes but it does not seem to work. The kernel may not have been replaced.
If I use the other method apt-get to replace the Kernel what package
name do I need to use?

When i run my Ubuntu server over night I often wake up the next morning
to the error message:
unable to handle kernel null pointer dereference
If I reboot the server then it works fine for a couple of hours at least
but then i see the error message again the next day.

I have been running previous version of Ubuntu were I have never experienced
any problems on with the Kernels. However that was on an NVIDIA ION mother
board with an ATOM processor (about 6 years old).
I have now bought a new ASROCK Q1900-ITX motherboard with an integrated Bay

I can try out the latest Kernel. I just tried to follow the instructions for
replacing with the proposed Kernel and it looks like Aptitude is replacing the
Kernel.
But afterwards when I run uname -r it claims that I still have the old Kernel
installed: 3.13.0-36-generic
