[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1367882] Re: linux-firmware-nonfree doesn't properly install firmware.
The recommended method now is sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer, if a temporary connection can be arranged to download the firmware from internet. Alternatively, if the target system can't be connected to internet, the entire b43 firmware directory can also be extracted and copied from the linux-firmware-nonfree package itself. That version of the package still contains the firmware files, only is configured such that it does not install them in its normal operation. However, the firmware files have been removed from version 1.16 of the linux-firmware-nonfree package. Instructions for the alternative (offline) method above in short - * Download version 1.14 from here : http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/linux-firmware-nonfree * Copy it to the target system and right-click open it with whatever archive manager program you have installed (e.g. file-roller, a.k.a. Archive Manager) * Extract the entire b43 directory from the package, for example, on your Desktop. * Copy it to your /lib/firmware directory - sudo cp -r Desktop/b43 /lib/firmware * Reboot This method is no better than the one in the post #38 linked by woofer above, but an official package is more trusted than an attachment by some user. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1367882 Title: linux-firmware-nonfree doesn't properly install firmware. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1239578] Re: No wireless support for Realtek RTL8192EE [10ec:818b]
Hello Graham, I've been following this bug for quite sometime, just out of curiosity. However, many of the comment posts here look like common issues that may or may not be related to this particular bug. Yours sounds similar. Oh, but not really same as #205 (Venkatesha). His was not connecting at all (dmesg suggests a possible Network Manager bug/confusion where it hops between different APs of same SSID before a connection is finally established), while yours at least seems to connect initially. I can't find your attached dmesg (forgot to attach?). I am actively involved in wifi troubleshooting at ubuntu forums, and this kind of problem, where network (wifi or ethernet) seems to be connected but browsing internet fails. I'm not yet sure about the exact reason but it seems to be like some sort of issue with 'resolvconf' package that is supposed to take care of DNS configuration. In many of such issues, the connection works as soon as 'resolvconf' package is removed or NM (IP, Subnet, Gateway, DNS, or atleast DNS) is manually configured instead of leaving it to DHCP. Not saying yours must be same, but it *sounds* like above, so the DNS issue is worth checking. Just try to ping first your gateway (AP/router), if successful, try pinging any internet address, for example Google's DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. If you get ping reply, it is definitely a DNS issue. As for the disconnection issue, I frequently need to set driver parameters fwlps=N and ips=N with almost all realtek drivers these days. I know these options are there to save power on wireless card, thus disabling them may cause unnecessary power drain issue, but disabling them with values N frequently seems to solve disconnection issues. Then there is another issue where the Power Management on wireless kicks in automatically and above two options are either not available or don't help. Common with Intel driver, but I think I have seen that with one of the Realtek drivers as well (recently, but don't remember which one). There are other ways to keep it turned off. I'm posting this just because I think people posting here should be aware that there are also some common issues out there that may be solved by some other ways. For detailed steps on trying the above possible fixes, just check out the Networking Wireless section of Ubuntu Forums. One may find a similar problem with a solution there. Of course they can also post their own thread asking for help, with reference to this bug if they have the same card. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1239578] Re: No wireless support for Realtek RTL8192EE [10ec:818b]
It's in the upper right of the page as dmesg.log. Yup, found that now, a place I never noticed before. Also, your problem may indeed be related to this bug, I'm just not sure and I know there are some other reasons too leading to same or similar behaviour. So potentially is the keyword in your post above. :) I couldn't notice any obvious culprit in the dmesg log. But then I'm just a hobbyist, not a pro. Based on confirmations in comment #59 here, and comment #22 in the related bug #1277959 , I have edited the ubuntuforums post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558) to change the wapf value from 1 to 4, and added the request to post the command output for model number. Still unsure though why it broke on models on which there was no problem with older kernels. As long as that remains unexplained and the Fn+F2 unfixed, this will still remain a 'Workaround', not a fix. But thanks to you, Hans, for at least patching the code for reported models to make them work out of box, and not requiring to apply the workaround manually. It'd be a delightful day when the real culprit is found and the 'real' fix is released, so that the Fn+F2 issue is fixed too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173681 Title: 168c:002b [asus_nb_wmi] [Asus U32U] AR9285 ath9k not working after updating to ubuntu 13.04 Raring (linux 3.8.0-19-generic) Status in The Linux Kernel: New Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: update: updated the BIOS to the latest version but the problem persists. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1173681] Re: 168c:002b AR9285 ath9k not working after updating to ubuntu 13.04 Raring (linux 3.8.0-19-generic)
Not promoting the WORKAROUND here, but as long as people coming to this page have to resort to it, I've re-written it in a cleaner and more comprehensive manner in this thread : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558 (also includes how to quickly completely revert back) Post #1 in it contains the symptoms, verification, and the workaround, and post #2 contains a workaround for the Fn+F2 key disability. Also, this workaround is LIMITED to *ASUS* Notebooks/Netbooks ONLY. I myself have an Asus X54C, but haven't upgraded from kernel 3.2.0-36 yet, so not affected yet. (a 500+ download will take about 2-3 frustrating days on my snail pace gprs connection that breaks every few hours). Would be more than happy to do the bisecting and other requested operations as soon as I upgrade. As a side note, I think there should be a separate bug report against asus_nb_wmi driver as this one addresses a problem that can be caused by other reasons on other models too. Have requested the same in the linked thread too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1173681 Title: 168c:002b AR9285 ath9k not working after updating to ubuntu 13.04 Raring (linux 3.8.0-19-generic) Status in The Linux Kernel: New Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: update: updated the BIOS to the latest version but the problem persists.
