[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1775717] Re: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT
So, running 16.04.1 with 4.4.0-21-generic since October, 22 - fans work just fine and laptop is more silent in general. Today tried to install exactly the same kernel - 4.4.0-21-generic in 18.04. Installed ok, but it freezes just after booting, even in single-user mode, with both nvidia and nouveau drivers. (nvidia driver installed by dkms from 4.4.0-040400-generic kernel.) I'd like to test this configuration (18.04 + 4.4.0-21-generic), but this freeze doesn't let me. Any suggestions how to debug this? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1775717] Re: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT
5 days ago I've installed Ubuntu 16.0.1 with kernel 4.4.0-21-generic on the second disk. No updates to kernel or libs were installed. So far no fan issue appeared. Also, 16.04 correctly goes to sleep when lid is closed which was not always the case with 18.04. Also, probably not related, but I always see one of kworker thread consuming 100% CPU, however it doesn't seem to affect anything, including thermal regime, most of the times fans are on low RPM. Running CPU-heavy loads, like games, spins up the fans, but they always throttle down after the heavy load is over. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1775717 Title: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: After upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, I've noticed that CPU and GPU fans suddenly go full throttle. Christopher, 1) On 16.04 I was using nvidia driver from Ubuntu packages, but can't really remember what version. I'm not sure if the history of package installation is recorded somewhere. On the other hand, I can try running 16.04 from USB stick with several different versions of the driver. 2) Sorry, I still didn't test it, will try tomorrow. The single time I tried it before, it gave a very poor performance, laptop was almost unusable. 3) Testing 4.18 seems a way easier, I can do it. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1775717] Re: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT
Hi Christopher, > 1) Regarding the use of non-default kernel parameter: > acpi_backlight=vendor > > Is this required for something? If you boot without this parameter does this > change anything? I've added acpi_backlight=vendor to kernel parameters because once the laptop didn't restore screen backlight after plugging AC power back. It seems to be completely different story, the fan issue appeared way before this parameter was added. > 2) If you remove the nvidia proprietary drivers, does this provide a WORKAROUND? This one I have to test. Will post back when I get some results. > 3) If you remove the 3rd party software "asus-fan" and "nbfc" is this still reproducible? Yes, the issue started before. Presence of this software is a result of my (fruitless) attempts to find a workaround. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1775717] Re: CPU/GPU Fans suddenly go 100% RPM on Asus ROG G752VT
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: After upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04, I've noticed that CPU and GPU fans suddenly go full throttle. It doesn't seem to depend on temperature, could happen when 32 °C reported, sometimes the laptop can work for day or two without this issue, but eventually it happens. The only way to stop fans is to power off the laptop, power on (fans go 100% at this point again), power off during BIOS splash screen and power on again. Seems to happen more often after waking up from a sleep. Things tried: Upgrading BIOS to latest available on ASUS site to the date of writing. No change. asus-fan kernel module (https://github.com/daringer/asus-fan). Detects both fans and shows correct speed in /sys/class/hwmon/*/fan{1,2}*, but does not seem to control it and does not prevent going full throttle. 4.17.0 kernel from Ubuntu mainline builds. Doesn't seem to affect the issue. Userspace fan control software (https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc). Can control speed of both fans to the point where they go full throttle, after that has no effect on them. Hi Joseph, Thank you for looking into it. Can't answer yet - I'll have to boot 4.4 kernel and run it for two days at least to make sure - going to start tonight. Also will attach more logs - apport-collect didn't work with mainline kernel.
