[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
Syncing Ubuntu usb_modeswitch is hardly possible because it's a fork of the original, using a C implementation of the wrapper script. I'd just throw out anything that's related to module loading and driver binding. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1819362 Title: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers" Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in usb-modeswitch package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have a HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick When I plug it in, journalctl shows me Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: switched to 12d1:14dc on 1/9 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access HUAWEI TF CARD Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch_dispatcher[3556]: Unable to open bind list file: No such file or directory Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: add device ID 12d1:14dc to driver option Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
Addendum: The "official" switching message suggested by Huawei may bring up either mode No.1 or mode No.2 in recent models. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
The behaviour of Huawei modems depends on the respective firmware and may result in very different 'target modes'. These are the ones that can be used with Linux AFAIK: 1. Ethernet mode (controlled via built-in web interface) 2. NCM mode (CDC NCM interface with 'hybrid' AT control) 3. Serial mode (traditional serial ports for PPP connection and diag messages) No.3 is becoming rare. No.1 is simple to use but the browser control is a bit awkward. No.2 is preferable for modems >3G and should be supported by kernel and Modem Manager. It has the least overhead. Not sure if and how SMS features are included there - that's not my field of expertise. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
usb_modeswitch did once upon a time check that a driver bound to the dongles interface(s) and if not then it did a modeprobe of the option serial driver. If it still didn't get option to bind then it added the dongles usb id to option's new_id and if the driver bound then it asked the user to report the usb id to usb kernel developers so that it could be properly added to the driver. There were too often conflicts between usb_modeswitch's driver loading and the kernels driver loading so it was decided after discussions with among others one of the modemmanager's developers to completely remove from usb_modeswitch any check for driver binding and forcing of driver binding. In short: usb_modeswitch is a userland switching utility which should leave the task of loading drivers to the kernel and not interfere with that. The driver checking/loading function was removed almost 3 years ago: "Version 2.4.0, 2016/06/12 ATTENTION: All ad-hoc driver binding code (using new_id driver attribute) removed - was a potential source of side effects and should now be obsoleted by good kernel support for modems" It seems that canonical doesn't agree and has re-introduced the driver checking/loading in their own implementation of later usb_modeswitch version. Regarding switching of E3531 with usb id 12d1:1f01 I can say that it is done with the linux switch message given by Huawei. They intend this device to become 12d1:14dc with a direct ethernet interface and no serial interfaces. Huawei has different switch messages for Windows, Mac, linux, and since a few years back also for Android. Early Huawei Android builds did only have support for ppp serial dial-up so the Android switch message brought up serial interfaces instead of net interfaces. usb_modeswitch is also used in Android and has the Android switch message included from version 2.5.1. usb_modeswitch can globally use the Android message by setting "HuaweiAltModeGlobal" in usb_modeswitch.conf or individually per modem by setting "HuaweiAltMode" in the modem config file. usb_modeswitch will continue to use the linux switch message for all Huawei modems, it is up to the end user to either select the right modem for his requirement (which often is serial ports for SMS operation) or to drop a new modem config file into /etc/usb_modeswitch.d which will override the one provided in /usr/share/usb_modeswitch.
Peter Schüller, please advise to all of the following: 1) While attached logs when using an upstream kernel advised one to contact "the Linux USB developers" (i.e. linux-usb and Maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman, as GKH ultimately reviews+approves/declines usb commits, and this would give him a heads up on whats coming down the pike for this issue), it is helpful to contact the recipients noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1819362/comments/40 with help from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel . 2) As per Kai-Heng Feng in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1819362/comments/41 there might be a WORKAROUND available while waiting for a fix. Does this allow the opportunity to use your device for now? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1819362 Title: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers" Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: I have a HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick When I plug it in, journalctl shows me Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: switched to 12d1:14dc on 1/9 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access HUAWEI TF CARD Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch_dispatcher[3556]: Unable to open bind list file: No such file or directory Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: add device ID 12d1:14dc to driver option Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
Peter Schüller, if this is confirmed with the latest mainline kernel (now 5.0.2), then the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem following the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel to the appropriate mailing list (TO linux-usb CC Greg Kroah-Hartman)? This article was written for folks who don't know anything about linux, so it's easy to follow. Please provide a direct URL to your post to the mailing list when it becomes available so that it may be tracked. The same happens with 5.0.0 (it is the uppermost folder in the mainline builds, but I think it is older than 5.0.1). Still, I can reproduce the bug with both of them. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-5.0.0 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1819362 Title: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers" Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have a HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick When I plug it in, journalctl shows me Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: switched to 12d1:14dc on 1/9 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access HUAWEI TF CARD Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch_dispatcher[3556]: Unable to open bind list file: No such file or directory Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: add device ID 12d1:14dc to driver option Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers! [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1819362] Re: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers"
Peter Schüller, in order to allow additional upstream mainline kernel developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest mainline kernel? Please keep in mind the following: 1) The one to test is in a folder at the very top of the page (not the daily folder). 2) The release names are irrelevant. 3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream. 4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may: 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there. 2) Backup, or clone the primary install. If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the mainline kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is not reproducible in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the Bug Description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists. If the issue is reproducible with the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so. In addition, to keep this issue relevant to upstream, please continue to test the latest mainline kernel as it becomes available. Lastly, it is most helpful that after testing of the latest mainline kernel is complete, you mark this report Status Confirmed. Thank you for your help. ** Tags added: bios-outdated-1.25 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1819362 Title: HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers" Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I have a HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick When I plug it in, journalctl shows me Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: switched to 12d1:14dc on 1/9 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access HUAWEI TF CARD Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0 Mär 10 19:21:20 pshp kernel: sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch_dispatcher[3556]: Unable to open bind list file: No such file or directory Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: add device ID 12d1:14dc to driver option Mär 10 19:21:21 pshp usb_modeswitch[3556]: usb_modeswitch: please report the device ID to the Linux USB developers!
