I did some research - CONFIG_AUFS_EXPORT=y in the following kernels for Ubuntu 12.04.5: linux-image-generic-lts-trusty (linux-image-3.13.0-36-generic), linux-image-generic-lts-saucy (linux-image-3.11.0-26-generic), linux-image-generic-lts-raring (linux-image-3.8.0-44-generic), and not set in: linux-image-generic-lts-quantal (linux-image-3.5.0-54-generic), linux-image-generic (linux-image-3.2.0-69-generic). So the fix is needed for 3.2 and 3.5 kernels in Ubuntu 12.04.
