I take my time to report a critical bug, which cripples the OS entirely.
Instead of looking into it, it gets changed to "incomplete" just because the
original reporter (i.e. me) is not going to undergo the risky procedure of
updating the bios, so the bug expires and get ignore

days.]

btw, keeps happening on 14.04.
It may happen randomly on any of the two usb ports I use. Once one port "dies",
I cannot connect the hub on that port (but I can connect a keyboard or mouse
directly) so I have to switch ports.

Ubuntu does not provide a seamless tool for doing it. I definitely won't
do that.
