Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1338555] Re: Keyboard completely unresponsive
OK. I started all over on this same laptop with a fresh install of 14.04.2 which I also updated. Then from the mainline kernel list I downloaded the three relevant files inside v3.13-trusty. After reboot the keyboard wasn't responding. Then back to v4.0-rc2-vivid/ on which the keyboard was fine. Going halfway between the two back and forth, the 'last bad commit' as you called it was v3.17-rc5-utopic/ and right above it in the list v3.17-rc6-utopic/ which was the first good one where my keyboard functioned properly. Just to confirm my results I tested v3.17-rc4-utopic/ where the keyboard also didn't respond. Moreover v3.17-rc4-utopic/ right above the first good commit was checked and the keyboard was fine. There are other details in the wiki about using github but I'm afraid they weren't very clear to me. Hope that was helpful. However when I downloaded the [v3.14-trusty/ 25-Feb-2015 09:38] kernel and installed it using [sudo dpkg -i *.deb] and then booted into it the keyboard worked fine. Maybe because I already edited the /etc/default/grub file on this same machine as described above. On Wed, Feb 25, 2015 at 2:56 AM, Christopher M. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1338555] Re: Keyboard completely unresponsive
Although I've probably been using Ubuntu for longer than the vast majority of users on this site, I've never really done any technical procedures as the one you've requested. So I'll give a detailed description of my steps so you can see if I messed up on the results. First I went to the link https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=showredirect=KernelMainlineBuilds and I read the 'Installing upstream kernels' section which I tried to follow. I then went to the 'Upstream kernels archive' link http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D and then to the “top link” which was [v4.0-rc1-vivid/ 23-Feb-2015 04:19] which in turn took me to the page http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-rc1-vivid/ and from there I downloaded linux-headers-4.0.0-04rc1-generic_4.0.0-04rc1.20150235_i386.deb 23-Feb-2015 04:16 1.1M linux-headers-4.0.0-04rc1_4.0.0-04rc1.20150235_all.deb 23-Feb-2015 03:36 13M linux-image-4.0.0-04rc1-generic_4.0.0-04rc1.20150235_i386.deb 23-Feb-2015 04:16 52M As directed I put them in a single folder and ran the [sudo dpkg -i *.deb] to install them, I suppose. At restart I didn't find a new entry in my boot menu as stated in the wiki however I found the kernel number starting with 4 after entering the 'Advanced options for Ubuntu' entry which was *Ubuntu, with Linux 4.0.0-04rc1-generic After booting into it the keyboard was working as normal so I added the Tag (kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-4.0.0-04rc1) as requested. I hope this was of help. ** Tags removed: apport-bug compiz-0.9 i386 trusty ubuntu ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-4.0.0-04rc1 kernel-fixed-upstream-kernel-fixed-upstream ** Tags removed: kernel-fixed-upstream-kernel-fixed-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338555 Title: Keyboard completely unresponsive Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Trying the USB live session of 14.04 i-386 on my laptop but the keyboard isn't responding. Bashar, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.13 to 4.0-rc1 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ? [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1338555] Re: Keyboard completely unresponsive
Bashar, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-3.XY-rcZ Where XY and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-3.XY-rcZ Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) = linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1338555 Title: Keyboard completely unresponsive Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Trying the USB live session of 14.04 i-386 on my laptop but the keyboard isn't responding.
