We have switched to the kernel in -proposed and everything looks good.
So verified.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-09-08 Thread Brad Figg
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
trusty' to 'verification-done-trusty'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

Bug description:
We regularly use bcache to use SSDs as an extra block cache layer for
performance on large working sets (archive mirrors, large databases,
etc). Until now we have had good success with bcache on precise LTS
with HWE kernels up to Saucy's.

Unfortunately when we mount a bcache-backed volume on a Trusty server,
it immediately loses contact with bcache_writebac:

PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

Thanks. It does indeed look like this got rid of the lockups in dmesg.
Thanks!

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-27 Thread Stefan Bader
Either pick the test-kernel from comment #7 or wait for a trusty kernel
with that patch get into proposed (which should trigger a automated
request for verification).

We regularly use bcache to use SSDs as an extra block cache layer for

Unfortunately when we mount a bcache-backed volume on a Trusty server,
it immediately loses contact with bcache_writebac:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-21 Thread Stefan Bader
SRU Justification:

Impact: Right now whenever the bcache module gets loaded, we can see
softlockup warnings caused by the writeback thread.

Fix: A patch picked from 3.17-rc1 will avoid those warnings. I bundled
this with one patch from upstream that avoids a crash on shutdown, which
is also caused by the fact that the writeback thread is not always
started now. A third patch which was sent upstream addresses the same
crash when modifying the writeback_running sysfs variable. This also
adds a check for the writeback thread to be running.

Testcase(s): Define caching and backing device with (bcache-tools):
  make-bcache -B backing dev -C cache dev
This will trigger the hung task after a while.
  echo 0 /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/writeback_running
This will trigger a kernel BUG. Both issues are gone with the patch series
applied.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-19 Thread Stefan Bader
So I am not sure there already is any solution to the load of 1, that I
see. 3.16/3.17 kernels that I tried have even more serious issues
(crashing). I pulled together three patches I got so far and build
Trusty kernels which can be found at [1]. It would be good if someone
could try them in a more real environment that mine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-18 Thread Stefan Bader
I think that the patch now (3.17-rc1) is upstream but in a slightly
modified version:

commit 7f179da0d15ded8f9d56616099f940d50ec582b5
Author: Slava Pestov s...@daterainc.com
Date: Thu May 1 13:48:57 2014 -0700

bcache: fix uninterruptible sleep in writeback thread

I cherry-picked that patch back into Trusty and currently check this in
a test VM. The warnings are gone but the load seems to be to high,
still.

Title:
bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel
  3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:

Unfortunately when we mount a bcache-backed volume on a Trusty server,
it immediately loses contact with bcache_writebac:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-16 Thread Haw Loeung
Looks like there's a pending patch[1].

I used the fix suggested by Sam Fulcomer[2] to set
/sys/.../bcache/writeback_running to 0 because the cache mod we're using
is writethrough.

| $ cat /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/writeback_running
| 1

| $cat /sys/block/bcache0/bcache/state
| clean

| $ cat /sys/block/bcache0/bcach/cache_mode
| [writethrough] writeback writearound none

Load seems to have dropped from a constant 2 to around 1. I've left it
over night and am not seeing any more call traces being logged.

Title:
bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel
  3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
We regularly use bcache to use SSDs as an extra block cache layer for
performance on large working sets (archive mirrors, large databases,
etc). Until now we have had good success with bcache on precise LTS
with HWE kernels up to Saucy's.

Unfortunately when we mount a bcache-backed volume on a Trusty server,
it immediately loses contact with bcache_writebac:

PID USER PR NIVIRTRESSHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND

501 root 20 0 0 0 0 D 0.0 0.0 0:00.00
bcache_writebac

kern.log shows it losing its mind pretty much immediately on startup:

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1357295] Re: bcache_writebac blocks and goes silent on trusty kernel 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu

2014-08-15 Thread Stefan Bader
Is that still the case with an updated kernel? The trace shows -23.47
which was the initially released kernel.
