[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-12-09 Thread Paul Stephenson
Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), I have managed to get the touchpad
working without installing Ubuntu from scratch.

I deleted the packages Synaptic Touchpad Driver for X.Org Server and
Commercial Driver Package, choosing the option for Complete Removal.
After a power off reboot, I installed the Touchpad Driver (the
Commercial Package was not available for install) and rebooted again.
The touchpad is now working so this ticket can be closed.

Many thanks for your efforts on this. The questions you raised were
very instrumental in pointing my thoughts in the right direction.

Kind regards - Paul

2014-12-08 Thread Paul Stephenson
Well it is a hard drive, an 80GB Maxtor SATA Diamond Max Plus 9 with all
partitions removed. It just happens to be connected via a USB adapter,
but otherwise it is capable of being installed into a PC as it is and
being booted from. If I could remove the internal drive and connect
this in it's place it would boot up.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-12-07 Thread Paul Stephenson
Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), the touchpad only works when the
system is booted directly from the live dvds I have tried. These are
12.04.0 and 14.04.1. It doesn't work on any kernel when booted from the
hard drive.

Just to reiterate, the touchpad did work when purchased earlier this
year. It came preinstalled with 12.04.1 LTS and the latest kernel it
was working on was 3.5.0-54. The touchpad will not work now when booted
from 3.5.0-54.

Hence my comment on update #22 that it seemed more like an upgrade/
configuration issue. I started off on this route months ago and the
best advice seemed to be to rebuild the system from scratch. I
followed all the advice about raising bugs and how to determine what
category it should be and all this led me to believe that it was a
kernel issue. There seems to be a lot more information available now
regarding touchpad issues in general and it was this that led me to the
comments on #23 and #24.

Hope this helps

Regards

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-12-06 Thread Paul Stephenson
Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), I have installed the latest upstream kernel
(3.18.0-031800rc7). There were several errors during the removal of the
previous upstream kernel and several errors during the installation of this one
similar to those experienced when installing the R17 upstream kernel. The
system did boot however but on every reboot of this latest kernel there are 5
or 6 system problems detected.
I have retained the terminal output from both the uninstall and the install.
The touchpad still refuses to work on the latest upstream kernel.

As the touchpad works ok when the system is booted from the 14.04.1 live
dvd, presumably this is the same kernel as that upgraded to from
12.04.1, i.e. the one the system is booting from? It makes me think
that there was an issue with the upgrade procedure and that maybe the
issue is with the device driver or configuration file.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-12-06 Thread Paul Stephenson
Have booted from the 14.04.1 Live DVD and examined the xorg log file.

There are no details of module syntp as per the above extract (found
by searching for synaptics)

The corresponding details from the Live dvd are below. The details from
Ask Ubuntu above give details of a package Synaptiks which no longer
exists at release 14.04. Therefore need to remove the existing package
from my system and replace it with the relevant package for release
14.04.01. Can someone provide the appropriate details please. Many
thanks

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-12-05 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Stephenson, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release
names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily
folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will
allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly
shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.18-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-11-29 Thread Paul Stephenson
Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), The notepad was purchased earlier
this year and had the previous LTS version of Ubuntu (12.04?)
preinstalled. I believe that it was in non-UEFI mode as I have not made
any changes to this (see below). It was upgraded directly to the
current LTS release, 14.04 and it was at this point that the touchpad
stopped working.

I have just tried booting on an older version of the kernel 3.5.0-54
from the boot menu, and the touchpad still does not work.

I just tried booting in UEFI mode (by disabling legacy mode) from the
hard drive but the BIOS reports that there is no operating system on the
drive. Re-enabled legacy mode and booted as normal but still no
touchpad.

Paul Stephenson, for regression testing purposes, could you please test
12.04.0 with kernel 3.2.x (not 12.04.3 or some other variant) via http
://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ and advise to the results?

2014-11-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Stephenson, just to clarify
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1362584/comments/5 :
This device worked fine prior to the upgrade.

What was the most recent release prior to Trusty that this worked in?

As well, was this in UEFI or non-UEFI mode?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-11-25 Thread Paul Stephenson
First option (default) on Boot option menu is currently CD/DVD UEFI
MODE however system will not boot in this mode from live dvd - boot
error message Could Not Open \EFI\BOOT\FALLBACK.EFL:14.

Booting from live DVD and rebooting from this (all in non-UEFI mode) and
the touchpad works ok, even on the boot options (try Ubuntu or Install).
Rebooting from live to currently installed version causes touchpad to
not work again.

Have not tried daily live image in UEFI mode as system would appear not
to boot in that mode, or does it ned pointing to a different file.

Wondering if the file path was in the BIOS I powered the machine back on
but failed to hit Esc in time. It went into the Grub menu and then
started booting but it paused with a white screen for a long time so I
pressed Esc again. It carried on booting and the touchpad worked. All
attempts to replicate this have failed and the touchpad persistently
does not work.

2014-10-26 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Paul Stephenson, does the touchpad continue to work if you install via
non-UEFI mode, and reboot into this via non-UEFI mode?

As well, does the touchpad work in a UEFI mode live environment via
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-10-25 Thread Paul Stephenson
At long last I have managed to do this BIOS update. The BIOS updates suppled
for the machine can only be applied in windows 7 or 8. Have tried XP and
although the logfile says that XP is supported it BSOD'd on me. I tried FREEDOS
but this was time wasting because:-
   a) A floppy image is too small
   b) USB has to be NTFS formatted not FAT32, screen just flickers
   c) After burning the 10MB image to CD and booting from that you find that
the BIOS installer will not run under DOS despite FREEDOS being an alternative
to windows and Ubuntu. A bit remiss of HP I think.

I had to download a win7 installation dvd ISO, burn it to DVD, boot from
this, select repair, then run a command prompt. I had the update file
(sp65847.exe) on a USB memory stick which became drive C:.

The BIOS flashed ok but ended very abruptly in a reboot and wouldn't
reboot initially as had tried booting from the flash drive which wasn't
NTFS. After powering off/ on again it then implemented some other
changes before rebooting as normal.

No change to the touch pad though, still unuseable. Output from above
two commands as follows:-

paul@tancove-lt2:~$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date
[sudo] password for paul:
F.45
02/10/2014

Only issue on reboot was a cmos checksum failure which the machine did a
reset to, and advised checking BIOS params. Only thing I noticed was
that the virtual machine facility was switched off in the BIOS which I
turned on again.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

2014-10-25 Thread Paul Stephenson
Have downloaded Ubuntu 14.04 LTS installation DVD and booted from this
as Live. Two boot options in BIOS relating to this - boot in UEFI
mode and boot in non UEFI. Booted in non UEFI mode as had seen mention
that someone had cured similar issue by installing in UEFI mode so
seemed a worthwhile exercise. Touchpad worked fine in non UEFI mode.
Not sure what this means as have been out of mainstream IT loop for a
few years now. Last systems I supported were XP based so not sure what
UEFI is all about.
