[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1391496 Title: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10. My whole disk is encrypted with luks and since the upgrade I have found I can no longer unlock my disk at boot. The enter password screen appears, but typing does not cause any characters to appear in the password box. However, if I hit ctrl-alt f7 (not sure of the precise function key) I get a black screen with a flashing white cursor and I can see the password that I entered. This would seem to imply that this is not a problem with the usb drivers, as has been reported in other similar bugs. It's as if the focus is simply in the wrong place at the time when I need to enter my password. Entering the password anyway and pressing enter has no effect. By using Grub to select the previous kernel, I can then decrypt my disk and use the system as normal. The working kernel version is 3.13.0-39-generic. The problematic kernel is 3.16.0-24-generic. --- ApportVersion: 2.14.7-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC3: mjs510 3162 F pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC2: mjs510 3162 F pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC1: mjs510 3162 F pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: mjs510 3162 F pulseaudio CurrentDesktop: Unity DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.10 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=66fe5f6c-9937-43f3-90ed-9764c8a9a263 IwConfig: eth0 no wireless extensions. lono wireless extensions. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot
tried adding modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules # List of modules that you want to include in your initramfs. # They will be loaded at boot time in the order below. # # Syntax: module_name [args ...] # # You must run update-initramfs(8) to effect this change. # # Examples: # # raid1 # sd_mod hid usbhid hid_generic ohci_pci hid-generic no luck, also tried modifying /etc/default/grub with both different resolution like GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600 and tried forcing grub mode into GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text or GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=wxh like in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/+bug/1375435 - no luck -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1391496 Title: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot
I have the same problem like @MaxSpicer. “I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10. My whole disk is encrypted with luks and since the upgrade I have found I can no longer unlock my disk at boot. The enter password screen appears, but typing does not cause any characters to appear in the password boot” I have kernel version 3.16.0-28-generic and 3.16.0-29-generic and I still have the same issue. I can’t enter a password in the password screen. I have a temporary solution for this situation. I had to choose recovery mode and next I can enter a password and choose option “resume a normal boot”. But it is not a perfect solution. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1391496 Title: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot
It appears that 3.16.0-28-generic fixes this problem so I will not do a full bisect. After successfully booting and decrypting my disks with 3.16.0-28-generic, I have just rebooted to 3.16.0-26-generic to confirm that the issue is still present there. I assume that this issue should now be closed. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1391496] Re: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot
Max Spicer, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 3.13 to 3.16 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting. Thank you for your understanding. I've just installed against upstream 3.18.0-031800rc6 (linux- image-3.18.0-031800rc6-generic_3.18.0-031800rc6.201411231935_amd64.deb, linux-headers-3.18.0-031800rc6_3.18.0-031800rc6.201411231935_all.deb, linux- headers-3.18.0-031800rc6-generic_3.18.0-031800rc6.201411231935_amd64.deb) and get the same behaviour. Focus does not go to the encryption key input box so it is impossible to decrypt my disk and boot. This new kernel does show one slightly different behaviour: when I type my key, it is displayed in clear text at the top left of the screen displaying the prompt box. As before, typing and pressing enter has no effect even though you can see the password appearing (in the wrong place). ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists- upstream-3.18-rc6 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1391496 Title: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10.
Here's a screenshot to illustrate the problem. It's a terrible photo, but you can hopefully see that what I type is being displayed at the top left and focus is not going to the enter passphrase box. In this photo I have typed a password and pressed enter. Nothing I can do makes focus go to the right box or causes the entered password to be used. ** Attachment added: IMG_20141124_102514.jpg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1391496/+attachment/4266637/+files/IMG_20141124_102514.jpg ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1391496 Title: [Intel DQ67SW] Can not enter password to decrypt disk at boot Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I have upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10.
