Hmm, scratch that - the failure reappears again even with this feature disabled in bios. But apparently it only happens with usb3 hard drives. Ok, I've managed to track this down to bios setting regarding keep feeding electrivity to usb ports while in sleep. After that (even if it was unmounted and removed) it becomes impossible: the system goes to suspend briefly (for bout 1 second) but immediately wakes up for no apparent reason. I suspect there's some weird bug in xfce power management - is there a way to disable it alltogether and rely on systemd directly instead?
