[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2016-05-19 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Ufos92, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu
repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

Please feel free to subscribe me to it.

For more on why this is helpful, please see

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2016-05-19 Thread Ufos92
got this bug on xubuntu 14.04.03 with the recent update. The WORKAROUND

--
Edit (or create) as root or sudo a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf as follows
(there should be a tab before each line except the first and the last):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
--

seems to be working, even though it reset my screen resolution, and I
had to fix it manually.

Can we please change the status or open a new bug?

2016-02-11 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
There is no change in this defective behaviour with the most recent
updates today. I suppose anyone affected is using the
workarounds. No one has offered to do kernel bisects. My main
work around is Debian Sid.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-11-23 Thread Dario Teixeira
I'm also experiencing Intel Graphics issues on two different systems
running Kubuntu Wily. One is a Baytrail Chromebook, and the other is a
desktop system with a Haswell Pentium processor. In both systems, using
the OpenGL Kwin compositors results in all manners of graphical glitches
and system instabilities. The only solution so far has been to revert
to XRender. Note that the desktop system was upgraded from Kubuntu
Vivid, which ran fine.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-11-09 Thread Lorenzo Bettini
I'm experiencing a similar problem after upgrade to Kubuntu Wily, though
in my case I have flickering when setting a lower resolution
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plasma-desktop/+bug/1514167).
The flickering makes the system quite unusable. I also tried to set the
UXA acceleration but that does not help (it actually makes things even
worse: slower and flickering does not go away).

The problem is with the current kernel

4.2.0-17-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 23 19:56:16 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Switching to the old kernel on boot SOLVES the problem of flickering and
things are usable again:

3.19.0-32-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 21 10:23:06 UTC 2015 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This is my card:

sudo lshw -c video

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Nope. Same graphics problem exists for me with 4.2.5-wily kernel
[sans xorg.conf]. Any good kernel is likely to be an earlier one,
not a later one, as the regression is yet unidentified.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-30 Thread Riskable
I was experiencing regular crashes and graphical glitching with KDE
Plasma 5 after upgrading to 15.10 and after discovering this bug I
decided to upgrade my kernel to the latest -wily version
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.2.5-wily/). That
seems to have corrected the issue. The glitching has gone away and no
crashes so far after about 20 minutes of use with intensive WebGL
utilization (which was what was causing the crashes previously).

Can it be related to

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

dmidecode -s bios-version &&  dmidecode -s bios-release-date && dmidecode
-s bios-vendor
A08
03/03/2006
Dell Inc.

Sorry, Christopher, the BIOSupdate made no difference. After
a few seconds to a minute or two the graphics are covered
with horizontal lines obscuring the screen same as the other
bloke's screen shot. I think navigating the LXDE menu seems
to trigger the behaviour, or not. The GUI eventually may
crash to a black screen. Only resortis to ctrl-alt-F[x]
switch to a command line interface terminal.

Something weird about the new Ubuntu kernels which is not in
the new Debian Sid4.2 or the previous 3.19 Ubuntu kernel..

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Bryan Cebuliak, could you please test the latest upstream kernel
available from the very top line at the top of the page from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release
names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily
folder)? Install instructions are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't
boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue
to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue.
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of
kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this
report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Bryan Cebuliak:
>"No sorry bisections are not appropriate yet. As the latest mainline after all
>still has the bug..."

Yes, a reverse bisection wouldn't apply here given this. However, a
standard bisection does apply as noted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1509556/comments/28
, regardless of a WORKAROUND.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-25 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Bryan Cebuliak, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from
kernel 4.2 to 4.3-rc7 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed
immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified,
then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your
release. Could you please do this following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F
?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit
bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-25 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
No sorrybisections are not appropriate yet. As the latest
mainline after all still has the bug I am trying this work
around as per Phil Hopkins:

Older Intel graphics adapters may need UXA acceleration instead of the
default. The work-around is to change the Xorg acceleration method to
UXA.

Edit (or create) as root or sudo a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf as
follows (there should be a tab before each line except the first and the
last):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

So far on the stock 15.10 4.2 kernel no problems. Will give it
a few more minutes.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1509556] Re: Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

2015-10-24 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Bryan Cebuliak, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19
/product-support/product/optiplex-gx280/drivers an update to your
computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (A08). If you update to
this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
change anything?

If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the
output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible, and the
information above is provided, then please mark this report Status
Confirmed. Otherwise, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
Kubuntu Wily upgrade screen glitch with 4.2 kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On recent update from 15.04 to 15.10, the new 4.2 kernel is
associated withgraphics instability after a few seconds of GUI use
with mouse and keyboard making the GUI unusable. See another
person's same experience with intel graphics here:
  askubuntu.com/questions/688649/kubuntu-wily-upgrade-screen-glitch

Downgrading to the last 15.04kernel solves my issue.

See result of ubuntu-bug linux from the terminal attached.
