Title:
Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
After plugging a ethernet cable into the laptop (Dell Latitude E7440),
Network Manager picks up as expected, requests a IP address and
configures the interface. After a couple of seconds, the interface
stops working. The interface start to response to packets only after
unplugging the cable and plugging it in again; disabling and enabling
  the interface does not help.

With dmesg I can see some ACPI errors everytime I plug a cable:

[ 76.322029] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: None
[ 81.345308] ACPI Error: Index value 0x0083 overflows field
width 0x7 (20150619/exfldio-341)
  [ 81.345329] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\NEVT] (Node
88040e0c7258), AE_AML_REGISTER_LIMIT (20150619/psparse-536)
  [ 81.345344] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.ECDV._Q66] (Node 88040e0c4b90), AE_AML_REGISTER_LIMIT
(20150619/psparse-536)

The 15 second gap between "Link is Up" and the ACPI error matches
nicely the max. 15 ping echoes received.

  I found bug 1501993 " drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:12326
  check_crtc_state+0x2c5/0x440 [i915]() ", which has a completely
different effect, but states exactly the same ACPI errors in comment
  #35.

  Tried BIOS A16, A10 and A04, also kernels 4.2.0-18-generic
(current), 4.2.0-16-generic and the vanilla 4.3.0-040300-generic, but
without any effect or changed behaviour.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-17 Thread Meik
Chris, it's working now. No idea why. I changed nothing. (At least not
intentionally.)

Never tried ethernet in the hotel, but noticed yesterday evening that
there is an ethernet port in my room. Plugged a cable in and it worked.
No dropped pings, no stalled connections. Also tried it this morning in
the office, with the same cable as yesterday and today it works.

This really qualifies for "more magic". http://www.catb.org/jargon/html
/magic-story.html

The only remarkable thing is that I bought a usb ethernet adapter
yesterday evening, but tried the integrated port in the hotel before
trying the usb adapter. The ACPI message still show up in the syslog,
but as the behaviour has changed (ethernet working again), they are
probably not related.

Thanks for your help, but without a flaw to investigate, we probably
have to close this bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-16 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Meik, at your convenience, could you please test a kernel from Utopic in
your present install with network-manager to see if it's working?

If not, it's correlated to a network-manager issue versus kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-16 Thread Meik
Good idea, I did some further investigations in the meantime and I have
no idea what makes the ethernet interface work only sometimes. I
disabled network manager, dnsmasq and avahi now, tracked for other
daemons, browsed through log files, but I still have no clue about this
fault.

As written before, the eth0 interface is sending and receiving for a few
seconds and then quiet for 20 to 50 seconds. The ACPI errors only show
up once after plugging a cable, so they are not directly related to the
issue. But after stopping so many daemons and no change of behaviour, I
suspect again a kernel related issue.

Do you have some advice how to install an old kernel? Just grab the
packages from the packages.ubuntu.org? And which packages do I need?

Thanks in advance

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-16 Thread Meik
Okay, looks like this ethernet interface issue is NOT related to ACPI.

I managed to get the ethernet interface working. I disabled network
manager, put a basic configuration for eth0 in /etc/network/interfaces
and ran "ifup eth0". No problems anymore. Playing around a bit, this
looks like network manager jumps is the causing the issue. The second he
jumps in, he breaks the configuration in some way.

For now this is okay, I have some work to do.

Not sure, how to follow up. This is definitively an issue to be fixed,
please advice if this bug should be reassigned to networking and if I
add updates on my further investigations on nm/dnsmasq, or if you want
me to open a new bug directly targeted at those components.

Title:
Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After plugging a ethernet cable into the laptop (Dell Latitude E7440),
Network Manager picks up as expected, requests a IP address and
configures the interface. After a couple of seconds, the interface
stops working. The interface start to response to packets only after
unplugging the cable and plugging it in again; disabling and enabling
  the interface does not help.

With dmesg I can see some ACPI errors everytime I plug a cable:

[ 76.322029] e1000e: eth0 NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow
Control: None
[ 81.345308] ACPI Error: Index value 0x0083 overflows field
width 0x7 (20150619/exfldio-341)
  [ 81.345329] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed [\NEVT] (Node
88040e0c7258), AE_AML_REGISTER_LIMIT (20150619/psparse-536)
  [ 81.345344] ACPI Error: Method parse/execution failed
[\_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.ECDV._Q66] (Node 88040e0c4b90), AE_AML_REGISTER_LIMIT
(20150619/psparse-536)

The 15 second gap between "Link is Up" and the ACPI error matches
nicely the max. 15 ping echoes received.

  I found bug 1501993 " drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:12326
  check_crtc_state+0x2c5/0x440 [i915]() ", which has a completely
different effect, but states exactly the same ACPI errors in comment
  #35.

  Tried BIOS A16, A10 and A04, also kernels 4.2.0-18-generic
(current), 4.2.0-16-generic and the vanilla 4.3.0-040300-generic, but
without any effect or changed behaviour.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-15 Thread Meik
Uploaded syslog, containing tests with several kernels:

Linux version 4.2.0-18-generic (buildd@lgw01-38) (gcc version 5.2.1 20151010
(Ubuntu 5.2.1-22ubuntu2) ) #22-Ubuntu SMP Fri Nov 6 18:25:50 UTC 2015 (Ubuntu
4.2.0-18.22-generic 4.2.3)
Linux version 4.3.0-040300-generic (kernel@gomeisa) (gcc version 5.2.1 20151010
(Ubuntu 5.2.1-22ubuntu2) ) #201511020949 SMP Mon Nov 2 14:50:44 UTC 2015
Linux version 4.2.0-16-generic (buildd@lcy01-07) (gcc version 5.2.1 20151003
(Ubuntu 5.2.1-21ubuntu2) ) #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 (Ubuntu
4.2.0-16.19-generic 4.2.3)

Same behaviour with all three kernels. So it is neither new in the
latest Wily kerne, nor it's fixed in the latest upstream kernel. Setting
kernel-bug-exists-upstream and kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.3 according
to the notes in other bugs.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1516407] Re: Ethernet interface stops working after a few seconds

2015-11-15 Thread Meik
Christopher, no issues with before upgrading to 15.10. A few days after
the upgrade I noticed that the Laptop freezes from time to time and
sometimes does not suspend, when I close the lid. That looks like an
ACPI issue for me.

I am currently travelling abroad, so my options to reinstall or debug
are limited. Do you have any idea, how I could get the ethernet
interface working?

I played a bit around and noticed that network interface is working from
for a few seconds now and then. Looking at ping output, there are
between 20 and 50 seconds "downtime" and
