[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1534948] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 fails to boot from Sandisk USB stick
Daro, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product- support/product/latitude-e5420/drivers?os=biosa an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (A14). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. Also, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible: 1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not. 3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid. Thank you for your understanding. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1534948 Title: Ubuntu 15.10 fails to boot from Sandisk USB stick Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Booting from Sandisk USB stick fails and stops on "device descriptor read/64, error -71" and "device not accepting address 6, error -71" on Dell Latitude E5420 Laptop. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1534948] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 fails to boot from Sandisk USB stick
Christopher, 1) Yes, badblocks scan shows no errors 2) I make bootable USB stick from ISO using dd. I use another USB stick for that (not Sandisk). After booting I proceed with installation process - I use Sandisk USB as target as if it was a regular harddrive. Installation proceeds without problem. Than I boot from Sandisk and this is when the problem occurs. 3) It was few month ago but I think it was ubuntu-15.10-desktop-amd64.iso. Than I upgraded to 16.04 using update-manager. The problem was there from the first install. Previous kernels tested: 4.2.0-16 4.2.0-18 4.2.0-19 There were some errors while installing upstream kernel (I attach thefile) but despite of that it managed to boot. The problem persists. ** Attachment added: "upstreamkernelinstall.log" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1534948/+attachment/4556381/+files/upstreamkernelinstall.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1534948 Title: Ubuntu 15.10 fails to boot from Sandisk USB stick Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Booting from Sandisk USB stick fails and stops on "device descriptor read/64, error -71" and "device not accepting address 6, error -71" on Dell Latitude E5420 Laptop. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1534948] Re: Ubuntu 15.10 fails to boot from Sandisk USB stick
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 kernel[0]. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed". Thanks in advance.
