I hope that helps now to continue...

when I run the pokini with a non-HDMI display I get the graphical
gui, not completely because the menues and the like is missing
(seems still some components do not work properly), but at least I
can login and open some terminal windows.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1567781] Re: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000134

2016-06-16 Thread hjl
Dear Chris and Uli,

I have installed Lubuntu 16.04 on another disk with pokini1. Running
kernel 4.4.0 does not produce the bug anymore. But, the Gui is still
broken, just no more kernel NULL pointer dereference error. I had to
change the display also and it is not HDMI.

I had gotten following info from Uli:
cause of problem is the GMA500 driver which causes the issues when
used with an HDMI display and the 1920x1080 resolution.

So far I was able to verify that. The issue is related to the HDMI
resolution and hence the driver.

My bios has two options for the shared memory for the display:

- 128 MiB and
- 256 MiB

I use since the very first installation the 256MiB option in then
 which never gave issues.

Seems that the current GMA500 driver needs more than 256 MiB or some
checks on available memory are not done properly...

I shall try now to blacklist the GMA500 driver and will let you know

Thahnks for your help and patience.
regards
hjl

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1567781] Re: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000134

2016-06-07 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
hjl, could you please keep testing successively older kernels from
4.7-rc2 to see if one newer than 4.6-rc4 allows a test?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1567781] Re: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000134

2016-06-07 Thread Uli Köhler
I faced the same issue with an embedded LEX 2I260D-H26 on Ubuntu 16.04
both in kernels 4.6. I faced an issue where (when not blacklisting the
gma500_gfx driver via /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf), the HDMI screen
would stay black, unless the HDMI cable was NOT plugged in during boot
in which case I could connect HDMI after startup and then restart the
display manager.

Also, the setup worked perfectly fine on a 1280x720 monitor (which does
not support Full HD), but displayed the abovementioned failure modes in
Full HD. I don't know if the dmesg error message also appears on the
1280x720 monitor, but it appeared if and only if the HDMI stayed black.

I have solved this issue in Kernel 4.6 mainline (I have not tried with other
kernels so far, but I will try with 4.4 in the next few weeks) by applying the
following settings in "VGA setting" in the BIOS:
On-Chip Frame Buffer Size := 64 MB (default: 8 MB)
Total GFX Memory := 256 MB (default: 128 MB)

I have not checked if any of those settings individually solve the
issue. In any case, however, I believe it might be an issue with lack of
memory, possibly either in the driver or in the firmware. It might also
be related to a memory overflow/use-after-free etc that is triggered by
the lack of memory.

My recommended procedure to fix the issue on your hardware is to go into
your BIOS and increase all memory settings for the embedded graphics
until the problem disappears.

I hope this information can help you debug it in your system.

Chris,
I have installed the 4.7rc2 kernel like 4.6rc6 before but
unfortunately the new kernel ist not started, the grub menu has the
4.7rc2 entry but does not offer it during start of the system.

regards
hjl

Chris, I tried to read the printing on the processor chip. it is not
readable, processor is soldered to the downside of the board...

the BIOS summary tell that I use a Intel ATOM Z550, the modell is a
POKINI Z manufactured by exone company. ( the current description
from the internet tells the the pokiniZ has a ATOM Z530 build in).

I hope this helps.
regards
hjl

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1567781] Re: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000134

2016-04-18 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.6 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.
