So, at some point I updated the system, and this behaviour stopped happening; tried a lot to reproduce it, and all that I got is the normal slowdown when you use disk a lot and try to use an app that suddenly needs to access disks. Joseph, Chad, sorry I can not throw more light here, :( Daniel,

BTW, the update that "fixed" the problem did NOT include new kernels So, the problem wasn't inherently there. After that, I updated the machine again (now it brought a new kernel version), but everything continued ok. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel

This used to be a problem with early Unity (v5/v6?) doing I/O bound operations in threads used for rendering. Which is obviously bad. Maybe we haven't fully solved that yet or regressed. Also, the choice of filesystem formats used on the USB drive could be a factor. In Ubuntu/Gnome/Nautilus I
