I've been using the 4.9.0 I mentioned in comment #14 with no trouble at all. There is a new 4.9.0 of about the same date in the drm-intel-next branch that knz tried in comment #11. See if that has the problem fixed. Someone can also try building Linus's 4.9.0 to see if it's a general or Ubuntu
