The screen goes black and all disk activity stops but the machine is still turned on and does not respond to any keypresses including trying Ctrl-Alt-F1 or the power button etc. The only way out is to turn off the power and boot again. As this happens mainly when programs are open (it doesn't seem to matter exactly what is open, just that the system isn't idle. Maybe when lots of memory is used?) it basically only happens at the worst possible times! Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].
