I have just upgraded to 4.8.0-27-generic via "apt upgrade" and the
system no longer freezes when I click the logout button. This is a good
sign. I will keep using it to see if there are any other freezes.

Reverting to linux-image-4.8.0-22-generic doesn't fix the issue for me.
I still have random crashes.
Can anyone help?

Title:
FWIW, reverting to the previous kernel linux-image-4.8.0-22-generic
fixes another graphic bug I experienced with LibreOffice on Kubuntu:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103676
** Bug watch added: Document Foundation Bugzilla #103676
I have the same problem: with kernel linux-image-4.8.0-26-generic, the
system randomly freezes completely (black screen, no network) a few time
a day with no apparent correlation to any software activity or cpu heat.
My laptop is an HP ProBook 6550b.
GPU: Intel Corporation Core Processor
Some interesting stuff in the syslog:
Nov 5 20:56:40 mrg-XPS kernel: [ 66.805478] BUG: unable to handle kernel
NULL pointer dereference at (null)
Nov 5 20:56:40 mrg-XPS kernel: [ 66.805549] IP: [< (null)>]
(null)
Nov 5 20:56:40 mrg-XPS kernel: [ 66.805571]
A second copy-paste of syslog content after a forced restart:
Nov 5 21:04:02 mrg-XPS kernel: [ 416.796333] BUG: unable to handle kernel
NULL pointer dereference at (null)
Nov 5 21:04:02 mrg-XPS kernel: [ 416.796393] IP: [< (null)>]
(null)

The issues began after performing an upgrade of the below packages:
Start-Date: 2016-11-05 19:34:18
Commandline: apt-get dist-upgrade
Upgrade: libsystemd0:amd64 (231-9git1, 231-9ubuntu1), libsystemd0:i386
(231-9git1, 231-9ubuntu1), udev:amd64 (231-9git1, 231-9ubuntu1), libudev1:amd64
Because this bug completely freezes the machine, I cannot run the above
mentioned command.
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
Status: Incomplete => Confirmed
