avim (avisoftware123). It should have not been working with 4.9 as touch pad. It was working as a mouse. E.g. with 4.9 you should not be able to do scrolls and other gestures. There are generally might be three cases with this touch pad: 1. The touch pad is not working at all, e.g. no cursor visible. This is due to three consecutive failed attempts to reset the hardware. This can happen with all the linux kernels < 4.10, it is a floating issue sometimes it happens on the same machine, sometimes not. The proper reset for this hardware need to be done with 1ms delay between device "power on" command and device "reset" command (this is implemented only in kernel >= 4.10) 2. The touch pad is working as a MOUSE. E.g. no scrolling or other gestures available. This will be the case with all the kernels < 4.10, when device reset happen to finish successfully. 3. The touch pad is fully working as a TOUCH PAD, with scrolling and other gestures support. This will be the case for all the kernels >= 4.10. Plus there will be no floating hardware reset issue. (it also worked with 4.9 ...) i don't have much time to test it on ubuntu 17.04. i defenely have to free some time for this before the release date. To avim (avisoftware123). You have an Asus FTE1001 TouchPad. Your TouchPad is supported by the Linux Kernel 4.10 and up. You can try to grab kernel 4.10+ from here and install it on your system: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline. If current daily builds of Zesty Zapus include Linux Kernel 4.10 you can try them to help Ubuntu developers test that Ubuntu includes the driver for this hardware in the latest builds. But I have read these are still using 4.9 kernel, which doesn't include the driver, it has been accepted only into kernel 4.10. If you want to use your existing kernel of your Ubuntu distribution you might want to try DKMS driver from here: https://github.com/vlasenko/hid-asus-dkms which is the original place where the Linux driver for this hardware is being developed and tested. The repository your are referring to as 3rd party and calling the usage of that repository a WORKAROUND: https://github.com/vlasenko/hid-asus-dkms is a PRIMARY repository of authors of the driver for this hardware at the moment. Also, while that's great you found a WORKAROUND from a 3rd party repository for your hardware, the original reporter has already confirmed a fix in the mainline kernel, where Ubuntu pulls from into supported repositories. Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
