I spoke too soon. Sound was working the first time I switched from 4.9 to 4.4, though volume couldn't be changed in the UI. However, after I rebooted again (4.4 -> 4.4) I never got sound to work again. I'm now returning the laptop (for this and other reasons - e.g. battery life sucks) so I can't
