Title:
iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

Status in linux-firmware package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
When I disconnect my AC adapter or run `sudo tlp bat` to switch to
battery mode my wifi stops working. Reconnecting the AC adapter or
running `sudo tlp ac` returns the wifi adapter to a functioning state.

I use the default TLP configuration without modifications and at first
I was thinking that this is a bug in TLP. The FAQs already have an
entry about this and state that this is due to the "kernel driver does
not implement power saving properly" [1]. This is why I'm reporting
  the issue here.

I'm using Ubuntu Disco and I remember this working in previous Ubuntu
versions / kernels. This happened on kernel 5.0.0-15-generic but also
  on the 5.1.5-050105-generic mainline kernel.

Below is a snippet of /var/log/syslog at the moment of switching TLP
to battery mode. Battery mode was activated at 11:25 and AC mode was
  re-activated around 11:27.

Please let me know if this is actually the right place to submit this
bug report and whether I can provide more information.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-06-05 Thread jnns
Dear Seth, dear Emmanuel,

please excuse me for having opened this ticket. Indeed, I found a
configuration which (among other things) activated d0i3 that I copied
and pasted verbatim from a blog post.

Sorry for causing such a mess. Although I'm thankful for your time and
helping me fix my configuration.

It's also disabled by default in our kernels.

https://git.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
kernel/ubuntu/+source/linux/+git/disco/tree/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi
/iwl-drv.c#n1643

And the 5.1.5-050105-generic kernel which was tested and also has the
problem is an unmodified upstream build. My system has nothing specified
for the module parameter in /etc/modprobe.d, and I get Y from
/sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/d0i3_disable.

@jnns, is it possible you've done something to your system to change the
module parameter? Could have been by adding it in in /etc/modprobe.d or
changing the kernel command line (cat /proc/cmdline). Not sure what else
might be changing it.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-06-05 Thread Emmanuel Grumbach
Hi Seth,

we debugged this and we found out that d0i3 was not disabled in iwlwifi.
This is a kind of power saving thing that requires integration with the
platform / kernel that should be enabled only for specific platform. Not
something that should be enabled in a distribution kernel.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/tree/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi
/iwl-drv.c?h=linux-5.1.y#n1670

In mainline, it is disabled by default.
Not sure what happened here.

Please look at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203787

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-05-31 Thread Seth Forshee
That does appear to be the latest firmware. There's some information
about debugging and reporting bugs here:

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi/debugging

There are some things there to try, but given that this appears to be a
firmware crash I don't know that they will be of much help. Your best
bet is to follow the instructions there to report a bug for the
developers at Intel to look at.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-05-31 Thread jnns
Thank you for helping out, Seth.

`dmesg | grep firmware` shows me

> [ 1360.174032] iwlwifi :02:00.0: Loaded firmware version:
36.9f0a2d68.0

so I assume that my /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-8265-36.ucode is being used.
That's also the latest version in the linux-firmware git tree.

Is there anything else I can check before publishing another bug report
at kernel.org?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-05-31 Thread jnns
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected disco wayland-session

** Description changed:

When I disconnect my AC adapter or run `sudo tlp bat` to switch to
battery mode my wifi stops working. Reconnecting the AC adapter or
running `sudo tlp ac` returns the wifi adapter to a functioning state.

I use the default TLP configuration without modifications and at first I
was thinking that this is a bug in TLP. The FAQs already have an entry
about this and state that this is due to the "kernel driver does not
implement power saving properly" [1]. This is why I'm reporting the
  issue here.

I'm using Ubuntu Disco and I remember this working in previous Ubuntu
versions / kernels. This happened on kernel 5.0.0-15-generic but also on
  the 5.1.5-050105-generic mainline kernel.

Below is a snippet of /var/log/syslog at the moment of switching TLP to
battery mode. Battery mode was activated at 11:25 and AC mode was re-
  activated around 11:27.

Please let me know if this is actually the right place to submit this
bug report and whether I can provide more information.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1830883] Re: iwlwifi Intel 8265 firmware crashing in powersave mode

2019-05-29 Thread Seth Forshee
Can you please run 'apport-collect 1830883' in a terminal to attach
relevant logs and system information to this bug?

It's likely you'll need to get support from Intel for this issue since
it is a firmware crash, but one thing you should check is that you have
the newest firmware available for your hardware. I can point you at the
specific file once you've attached your system information, but if you
know which file you need you can find it here:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-
firmware.git/tree/

If you still have this problem with the newest firmware available, you
should report the bug here:
