It appears the kernel (or the modeset driver) can't detect your
monitor's EDID via the VGA cable. And an EDID is required to know the
supported resolution. Without it you will be stuck in 1024x768.

Please try a different VGA cable, or simply unplugging and replugging
it.

If you still have a problem then this is either a kernel bug or simply
too old a monitor to be automatically detected. In the latter case you
would need to manually program in the supported graphics modes, using
something like:
