I can confirm this issue. I can get to my desktop by attaching an
external monitor -- it is apparently only the internal display which
doesn't work. This is on a raring - saucy upgrade.
I also tried mainline kernel 3.11.1-031101-generic and it has the same
issue.

So I found out, why those hangs occur (or better: how to heal them):
till now I've had a script in my autostart-section which essentially just
disabled the dgpu (the power-gpu).
It seems like X.org or something isn't happy with getting robbed a card while
it is running.
So my solution/fix is:
On 19.09.2013 and 20.09.2013 daily build for 64-bit too.
And any error.

System Hangs With Kernel Migration Processes Consuming 100% CPU
3.12 is still similar, when it first wakes it's black for 3 - 4 seconds,
then it goes to the distorted screen for 50 - 60 seconds, this time I
saw a black terminal type window for the first time (it said Failed To
Idle Channel it said that twice on the screen. Then it went to the
resume logon

from mainline kernels - all higher releases freeze during initial stage and I
am unable to identify when.
Anyhow, the symptoms are the same with this kernel version.
I aditionaly disabled the usb audio driver
After disabling my terrible wireless adapter, I was able to install

was running it from a USB drive, however, because I didn't want to put a

In my case it was because I had a small (480 MB) /boot partition and
there were lot of (~10) 3.8 kernels. I have uninstalled older ones by
hand and now the installation is OK. I have encrypted home and I don't
think that could be reason for insufficient space on /boot.

I had the same problem.
The sollution that worked for me was
- starting up with the usb,
- dowloading boot-repair
- starting boot repair, using advanced options - it points efi out, and
suggest to repair the system partition.
It may work as a workaround.
Proper check by expert user required
Ok, so it sounds like both commits need to be reverted. I'll build that
kernel and post it shortly.
