I had the same problem with an Asus Z97-Pro motherboard running 14.04 with Gnome. As instructed, I added the line options snd-hda-intel vid=8086 pid=8ca0 snoop=0 to the bottom of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and the sound problem went away. Thanks very much for resolving this.
