This seems to be a bug in gcc itself. It should automatically disable
PIE when -mcmodel=kernel or when __KERNEL__ is passed in a header.
Attempts to compile using no PIE command line flags don't work either.
It's as if it's not allowing it to be turned back off.

I've installed Ubuntu 15.04 (at the moment running kernel
4.2.0-35-generic) and this bug was NOT present; there seems there is
some kind of regression.
Will go on with investigation with mainline kernel and update.
Thanks for your help.

I've been using the http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ to
test and narrow down which kernels are good and where the bug was

I have been testing the kernel with commit cd4842f4(1c8349a17 in
mainline) reverted for three days now without hitting the bug. It's
looking very promising that commit cd4842f4 is what introduced this bug.
I'll continue to test this kernel for a few more days to ensure it's
stable. It would be

I was able to compile HHVM and Nvidia binary driver by reverting GCC
package to older version, now Xenial uses newer packages by default,
which makes compilation out of the box impossible.
This doesn't feel like dkms-specific issue, since HHVM is very different
thing and suffers from the same
