I will try to do stuff with git and "make kernel".

It seems one of the RAM modules in that machine degraded over time -
while memtest86 found no problems in the past, now errors are discovered
within seconds.
It's unclear when the module became faulty, but it's quite plausible
that the observed kernel panics were caused by this and that there's

I have tried to do as you suggest, but hit a problem installing
4.18.0-041800rc6. Two of the downloads install, but the third fails and
my Linux skills are insufficient to work out what to do next. If you are
able to make a suggestion I'm happy to have another go.
If so, here
gaetan-quentin's workaround helped me for now:
systemctl stop systemd-udevd
sudo apt remove *nvidia-compute-utils*
systemctl start systemd-udevd

gdm without 'nomodeset' halts the machine).
Thanks,

Public bug reported:
The 'beep' command does not beep: I get no errors, not even in log files or
dmesg, but no sound can be heard.
The beep volume is ok (checked and unmuted with 'alsamixer').
This used to work in 16.04, so it is a regression.
'lsmod' shows that the 'pcspkr' module is loaded.
