The solution to my problem was given to me in #ubuntu on Freenode.
Kernel parameter radeon.dpm=0. That's dynamic power management. I think
the clue was that everything works fine when the laptop is not plugged
in, so the fine young man probably thought there was a bug in dynamic
power management.

Apologies all to waste your time. It turns out that, in moving my
computer slightly to upgrade the OS, the inside of my aerial cable broke
and this was a hardware issue.
I realised when I rolled it back and the issue persisted. I have
replaced the cable and all works fine now, thanks.

I tried with the latest kernel 3.15 rc5 and I still got the error.
Attached is the dmesg file

Hi Chris,
Yes, I had the same problem prior to Trusty. Someone else had posted a
report on it as well prior to Trusty, although that report got marked as
specific to Unity and you marked it won't fix when the original poster
indicated perhaps it was fixed for them. I have been using other DE's,
Before 14.04, I was running 12.04 LTS and had been using it since I got
this machine, starting with 12.04.2 I think, not sure, and the last
kernel I had installed before updating to 14.04 was Linux 3.11

I hope I'm doing this correctly. For reference, it took me (both this
time and last) several tries to reproduce. The first few suspends
worked. I restarted again. After a few suspends, it started doing this
instant-wake behavior again (which it then will do consistently unless I
run that
and the other file…

I have the impression this will not be a simple short task. I've never
done anything like it before, so it'll take me some time and energy to
make sense of it. I'll work on it sometime soon though. Thanks

Public bug reported:
I was using the TeVii DVB-S2 S480 (which is a dual tuner equivalent to two
DVB-S2 660 cards):
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/TeVii_S480
in Mythbuntu 12.04 for a long time without issue.
I have recently updated to 14.04 and it will no longer lock on channels, giving
Running
scan -x0 /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Astra-28.2E | tee channels.conf
gives tuning failed errors for each channel, eg:
DVB-S IF freq is 1782000
WARNING: tuning failed!!!
tune to: 12402:v:0:27500
DVB-S IF freq is 1802000
WARNING: tuning failed!!!
tune to: 12402:v:0:27500 (tuning failed)
I also have an Acer Aspire 5100. I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 and I
have this exact problem. The machine boots fine, but after a suspend the
screen tears/flickers so badly that the machine is unusable. Note that
the problem does not occur with hibernate.
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
Also I have tried booting with nomodeset, but then the proper driver
isn't run at all, the screen resolution is wrong, and there's no way to
change it.

The screen is fine after hibernate. In fact if I leave a window open
with $ sudo pm_hibernate ready to go, I can bring the screen back by
hitting enter to hibernate after a suspend/resume. However the wifi
disconnects after after hibernate/suspend. Will file/revive a second bug
report for that.

This still appears to exist with linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic.
Also, I have found an upstream bug that matches this.

With the recent kernel update this started working for me. Looks like it
is using the packaged firmware, not the updated one, which might mean
the updated one is not needed for this device.
