I did "systemctl restart NetworkManager" and observed errors from fanctl
in my syslog. Then I upgraded ubuntu-fan to 0.12.9~17.10.1 and did
"systemctl restart NetworkManager" again, and this time there were no
such errors. However, I'm not certain that this is an adequate test, so
I'm not changing
I'm sorry, I found a workaround for this issue -- changing my Synology
NAS configuration to allow SMB 3 to be used made the problem go away, or
at least it seemed to -- and I don't have any more time to spend
troubleshooting it.

filesystem on my Synology NAS, I start getting kernel oopses and the
terminal windows in which I'm doing the file operations -- whose current
directories are inside the CIFS filesystem -- suddenly crashing.
I am using the nvidia driver for my graphics card. It sounds like I
can't do that with an upstream kernel build? Is that correct? Well my X
server automatically use the open-source Nouveau drivers if the nvidia
driver isn't in the kernel, or do I need to reconfigure something

I ordered a brand new, "premium" Roswell HDMI cable from Newegg and the
problem occurs with that cable as well.

FYI: While apport-collect was running, my screens went blank briefly and
then when they came back my monitor configuration was wrong: the ultra-
wide monitor was at a lower resolution than it's supposed to be and the

script that checks if my YubiKey is plugged in, and if it isn't it
exits.
I don't keep my YubiKey plugged in when the laptop is closed and idle —
and it certainly wasn't
