This does _not_ happen with my Cannon PowerShot S3IS, nor has it
happened with any of the USB sticks that I've used on this computer.

You were correct. Installing the "extras" made my track ball work. The
computer has now held up for several hours, which is considerably longer
than it survived under the -69 version. So -- I think the -70 fixes it,
at least for me.

just loaded the above 3.16.0-70 kernel -- I didn't stay long enough to
see if it solves the problem, because it killed my trackball (and old
USB Logitech). 3.16.0-67 works, though (it's what I'm using at the
moment).
