I am having this same error when using a Zalman ZM-RSSC External USB 5.1 Sound adapter. The machine is a fresh install of LUBUNTU 14.04. Before upgrading my HTPC, I was using this same sound adapter with another PC running LUBUNTU 12.04 and did not get this error. I get this error logged
