[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1580311] Re: Laptop panel output only if external display connected
As of 4.4.0-28-generic I can no longer boot even with an external display attached. I have had to revert completely to 4.2.0-35. So, there we go a change in behaviour between the current and previous 4.4.0 packages. Surely thatÅ› enough to find an inciminating commit? I'm sorry, but this kernel bisection thing is completely beyond me. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1580311 Title: Laptop panel output only if external display connected Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, Since updating to 16.04 with kernel vmlinuz-4.4.0-22-generic my laptop no longer completes the boot sequence under a normal boot scenario - the "loading initrd..." message is displayed, then, when the VGA modesetting usually kicks the display into a higher resolution, the screen blanks and the startup apparently halts. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1580311] Re: Laptop panel output only if external display connected
mjh, the next step is to fully commit bisect from kernel 4.2 to 4.4 in order to identify the last good kernel commit, followed immediately by the first bad one. This will allow for a more expedited analysis of the root cause of your issue. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ? Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting. Also, the kernel release names are irrelevant for the purposes of bisecting. After the offending commit (not kernel version) has been identified, then please mark this report Status Confirmed. Thank you for your help. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream-4.7-rc6 needs-bisect regression-release -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1580311 Title: Laptop panel output only if external display connected Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, Since updating to 16.04 with kernel vmlinuz-4.4.0-22-generic my laptop no longer completes the boot sequence under a normal boot scenario - the "loading initrd..." message is displayed, then, when the VGA modesetting usually kicks the display into a higher resolution, the screen blanks and the startup apparently halts. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1580311] Re: Laptop panel output only if external display connected
Sure there is something more proactive that can be done than mere testing of new kernels and BIOSes? It should be possible to isolate the cause of the problem by comparing the diffs between 4.2.0-040200 and 4.2.0-35-generic, as I mentioned above. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1580311 Title: Laptop panel output only if external display connected Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi, Since updating to 16.04 with kernel vmlinuz-4.4.0-22-generic my laptop no longer completes the boot sequence under a normal boot scenario - the "loading initrd..." message is displayed, then, when the VGA modesetting usually kicks the display into a higher resolution, the screen blanks and the startup apparently halts. I appreciate this might be a template message but "buggy, insecure and outdated" aren't tremendously useful perjorarives to include. Pass the blame if you want, but the fact remains this is a regression from previous releases of Ubuntu. On 5 Jun 2016 16:40, "Christopher M. [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1580311] Re: Laptop panel output only if external display connected
mjh, as per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product- support/product/inspiron-15-3552-laptop/drivers?os=biosa an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is available (4.0.7). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. Also, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible: 1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an apport-collect): sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date 2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement or not. 3) Please mark this report Status Confirmed. If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: bios-outdated-4.0.7 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1580311 Title: Laptop panel output only if external display connected Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Hi, Since updating to 16.04 with kernel vmlinuz-4.4.0-22-generic my laptop no longer completes the boot sequence under a normal boot scenario - the "loading initrd..." message is displayed, then, when the VGA modesetting usually kicks the display into a higher resolution, the screen blanks and the startup apparently halts.
