I just started working for the first time ever.
Not sure if it is a kernel upgrade that did the trick, but it is now running
the following kernel:

x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Suspend works, and shutdown works! :)

I tried the 4.8.0 rc5 kernel.
I had to use recovery mode to get it to boot. I was able to resume every
step to get it running, but I could not boot automatically.
The shutdown function still did not work.

I installed this Laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 right about when it was
released, and it has been patches regularly, and it has never been able
to shutdown, hibernate or standby.
I have not had any former version of Ubuntu installed on it.
