@utkatubuntu that mtp-probe error message indicates your device might
just doesn't declare necessary interface for MTP. Please file a new bug
if you're still interested in it, and please attach `sudo lsusb -v -v
-v` there.

Update: I can now see that USB storage devices are automounted. This was
resolved by installing gvfs:
sudo apt-get install gvfs
