Syncing Ubuntu usb_modeswitch is hardly possible because it's a fork of
the original, using a C implementation of the wrapper script.
I'd just throw out anything that's related to module loading and driver
binding.

According to Bjorn Mork [1], this modem should work out of the box
without usb-modeswtich.
So what do we need to do to make it work under Ubuntu? Sync usb-
modeswitch with the upstream version?

Correction:
The mode that Huawei calls "HiLink" is No.1, not No.2.

HUAWEI E3531 HSPA+ USB Stick "please report the device
Addendum:
The "official" switching message suggested by Huawei may bring up either
mode No.1 or mode No.2 in recent models. If No.1 shows up, there is a
possibility that the "HuaweiAltMode" message may bring up No.2 instead.
This is up to the user though, there is no comprehensive information
The behaviour of Huawei modems depends on the respective firmware and
may result in very different 'target modes'. These are the ones that can
be used with Linux AFAIK:
1. Ethernet mode (controlled via built-in web interface)
2. NCM mode (CDC NCM interface with 'hybrid' AT control)
3. Serial mode
usb_modeswitch did once upon a time check that a driver bound to the
dongles interface(s) and if not then it did a modeprobe of the option
serial driver. If it still didn't get option to bind then it added the
dongles usb id to option's new_id and if the driver bound then it asked
the user to
It's "2.5.2+repack0-2ubuntu1".

This is not an issue for Linux USB developers, it is a matter of
usb_modeswitch's default switch message under linux and Canonical's
implementation of usb_modeswitch.
As a start before I continue, which is the usb_modeswitch version?

Yes, please let "Bjørn Mork " to take a look, so we can

The fix of Kai-Heng Feng works and the modem becomes available and at
least SMS sending via modem-manager-gui works!
(I did only the "Add customized usb_modeswitch configuration" part and
re-plugged the device.)
Should I still report the issue upstream?

Peter Schüller, please advise to all of the following:
1) While attached logs when using an upstream kernel advised one to
contact "the Linux USB developers" (i.e. linux-usb and Maintainer Greg
Kroah-Hartman, as GKH ultimately reviews+approves/declines usb commits,
and this would give him a heads

Peter Schüller, if this is confirmed with the latest mainline kernel
(now 5.0.2), then the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could
you please report this problem following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel to the appropriate mailing
list (TO linux-usb CC
The same happens with 5.0.0 (it is the uppermost folder in the mainline
builds, but I think it is older than 5.0.1). Still, I can reproduce the
bug with both of them.
