[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Hmm, same problem - either that log is missing the crash details or we
have a new similar bug in kernel 5.11. Regardless it's probably safe to
say the original bug in kernel 5.8 won't be fixed since that's now been
officially replaced by 5.11. So whatever the issue is in comment #42/#40
is what this bug should be about now.

** Summary changed:

- System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)
+ System freeze (does not wake from sleep)

** Changed in: linux-hwe-5.8 (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Won't Fix

** Changed in: linux-hwe-5.11 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => New

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The log in comment #40 shows the system sleeping but never
waking up again. It's not clear if that's the same bug and just missing
log entries or a new bug. To help us figure it out please try:

1. Suspend.

2. Open the lid.

3. Wait 10 seconds.

4. Reboot or REISUB.

5. Run this command:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

6. Attach the resulting text file here.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-11 Thread sheepscrossing
The 5.11 kernel locks up when left in suspend mode overnight and Alt/Sysrq
REISUB will not be recognized either. I have been able to suspend the laptop by
shutting the kid for smaller amounts of time and having the system respond
again when the the lid is reopened, 1 to 2 hours. But leaving it suspended for
overnight will cause it to hang every time. I have booted the other kernel on
the system, 5.8.0-63 and will see if that works. I haven't downloaded the
linux-oem-20.04c package yet.
Any more advice?

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you experience lockups with kernel 5.11 then please:

1. Wait 10 seconds.

2. Reboot.

3. Run this command:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

4. Attach the resulting text file here.

Thanks Daniel. I think 5.11 kernel locks up as well but I'll test it
again to be sure.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-09 Thread sheepscrossing
Please advise the name of the packages I need to purge. I've tried a lot
of different things but haven't found the right name.

Also I have booted 5.11.0-25 and the system locked up when I lifted the
lid to resume, I hard to do a hard boot as even Alt/Sysreq REISUB won't
work. I guess I'll try Mr. Feng's kernel next.

The "invalid signature" problem I think is caused by Secure Boot. Try
disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS.

Also sorry again because it sounds like that libc6 problem is going to
keep getting in the way. But good news: Kernel 5.11 has now been
officially released to Ubuntu 20.04 updates. So you can delete the test
kernel packages with:

  sudo dpkg -P PACKAGENAME1 PACKAGENAME2

and then do a system update to get the official update to 5.11:

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt full-upgrade

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm hoping the official update to 5.11 is enough so the suggestion in
comment #29 won't be necessary.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-08 Thread Daniel van Vugt

2021-08-07 Thread sheepscrossing
I compiled the new images that you sent. Linux 5.10.56- and received
the same error about Libc6 being downlevel, but when I rebooted that kernel it
booted with what appeared to be the same errors as 5.13.7.
Boot.log shows:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of
backlight:acpi_video0.
See 'systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service' for
details.

I didn't see any other errors. Where should I be looking for the startup
messages that I'm seeing?

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-06 Thread sheepscrossing
Did you mean for me to download all 7 of the modules at this URL and
compile them?

BTW the system booted this time with the 5.07.13 kernel but it had errors I
didn't have time to see.  I guess because I disabled the "invalid signature"
parameter. These are the only errors I encountered in the Boot.log:
Starting Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of
backlight:amdgpu_bl0...
[FAILED] Failed to start Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of
backlight:amdgpu_bl0.
See 'systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:amdgpu_bl0.service' for
details.
[FAILED] Failed to start Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of

details
[FAILED] Failed to start Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of

See 'systemctl status systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service' for

Should I be looking somewhere else?

Also the "invalid signature" problem I think is caused by Secure Boot.
Try disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1937321] Re: System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

2021-08-03 Thread sheepscrossing
Had another crash and unlike bug 1917674 the keyboard won't respond at
all. I tried the ALT SYSREQ (prt sc) REISUB and REISUO and nothing
worked. Any comments Daniel?

Title:
System freeze (amdgpu kernel crash on resume from suspend)

Status in linux-hwe-5.8 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
System freezes after I close the lid on the laptop and leave it closed
overnight. It doesn't respond to any key presses or mouse clicks including
Ctrl-Alt+F4. my only recourse is to force the power off. Sometimes it has the
"suspend" screen showing but mostly it's just black. The Power settings -Dim
screen when inactive = yes
Blank screen = never
Wifi and Bluetooth can be turned off to save power = yes
Automatic suspend on battery power = yes
Power button action = Power off
