Apologies to everyone trying to help. It turns out that the problem is
the computer: a 4 month old Asus mini PN50-1. I suddenly remembered that
the same thing had happened last August and that the supplier had given
me a replacement after I returned the original.

Using 'sudo smartctl -i -a /dev/sda', it shows for '202
Percent_Lifetime_Remain' the number 1. Does this mean that I should change my
SSD ASAP?

Tech Support Realtek told me to disable Secure Boot which I have done. I was
then able to compile & install r8125, r8128 & r8128 modules obtained from
Realtek website. 'lsmod | grep r81' showed all 3 modules. ifconfig showed the
ethernet interface Ok (as enp3s0). However, ethernet still

I've just tried to generate & insert r8169, by first downloading GBE Ethernet
LINUX driver r8169 for kernel up to 5.19 (i.e.r8169-6.031.00.tar.bz2 from

it to r8169-6.031.00:
I forgot to mention that the firmware is present:

I checked that r8169 was in the OEM kernel. I used Synaptic to search
for any dkms packages. Only one was dkms itself which I removed. I
rebooted with 5.43 kernel and checked again for r8169: it was not
present. How do I add it?

You should not need any DKMS packages nor an OEM kernel. The stock
Ubuntu kernel supports your NIC natively. Remove the DKMS modules and
reboot into the 5.19 kernel and post the dmesg output from that boot.
lsmod should list the r8169 module.

I don't recall what I did to make ethernet hang on attempting
connection. It was a few weeks ago. As I previously detailed Wi-Fi also

mini PN50-1 with a Ryzen 7 4700-U CPU. So it's always been using 22.04.
I transferred the memory and SSD from my previous old computer. I think
