- extra columns need to be entered into the CSV file directly prior to
import, you can do that e.g. using a spreadsheet or in MS Access, by
importing+editing+exporting
- Max Length property can be altered in KEXI's table designer at any time
i.e. can be done after import

That would be a good extra feature of the importer. I think it was not
planned because it is easier to envision one the table altering feature
that servers all the needs. Unfortunately that altering has not been
delivered yet.

One feature (altering) would be also less things to manage.

"External Data -> Import Data from file" supports CSV.
"External Data -> Import tables" supports TSV which is a special tab-based
subset of CSV formats.

Re: Importing tables into Kexi

2020-08-06 Thread Jaroslaw Staniek
Hi Swarup
KEXI can import individual tables from CSV at the moment. Also I wanted to
point out that the CSV format:
- does not define representation of multiple tables
- does not define constraints like the permitted characters

This is all application defined. MDB defines it so it could be useful for
the import.

My opinion is that it works in 3.2.0 and I worked on this issue for 3.2.0.
Natural thing: because the Ubuntu distributors are not part of the KEXI
project, they give no guarantee about their binaries, there is no 100%
guarantee how it will behave.

Upgrading is not straightforward due to the distribution's guidelines. This
is why the Flatpak version of KEXI has been developed - to suit many
distributions in one go. If all effort is put into distributing, there
would be no time for new features or fix in KEXI. Alternative can be a paid
download.

Hello. Right. First step is to upgrade to 3.2.

Always three ways as follows, whatever suits best:

1. Request an easy way from your distributor
2. Change the distributor
3. Install a Flatpak snapshot https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Snapshots

I am sorry about that. The forum thread explains a bit the fact that these
features mean larger endeavours so we need more contributors on board.

Users can export each table by right-clicking and exporting to a file.
Because these are SQLite tables, users can also run apps like sqlitebrowser
to export all tables in one go (File->Export->CSV).

Swarup,
I double checked and I see I had no data in my test table, that's why I
observe different message. I also confused the property with the "Default
value" property.
It would be best if you add a bug report to bugs.kde.org then, thanks.
In the report I will be can recommend a warkaround for you for changing the
property without removing data.

Re: Adding rows in Kexi 3.1.0

2019-05-02 Thread Jaroslaw Staniek
Hi Swarup
Order or records in a database query or table can be defined using specific
column of type that can be sorted. This assumption is not mandatory though
and can be ignored.

The column to sort is usually of integer type. Sort by this column, e.g. by
clicking on the header and will be ordered.

Primary key is a good default sorting column which in addition is
autoincremented so its sorting is out of the box.
In KEXI you can edit values even in this column so to reorder records you
have to edit the numbers accordingly.

E.g. consider table with the primary key column and some text column.
Before:
1 a
2 b
3 c

After renumbering:
1 inserted row
2 a
3 another inserted row
4 b
5 c

As you see it is renumbering as follows: 1->2, 2->3, 3->5.

What you ask for looks like a support for spreadsheet-like behovior for
tables/queries where records are strictly sorted and the order is
preserved. This is something I've been thinking about as extension, special
mode for the tabular view. Feel free to file a wish for it at
https://community.kde.org/Kexi/File_a_bug_or_wish.

Dear All!

We are happy to announce the 3.2 Beta release of KEXI, KDb, KProperty and
KReport.

Please find it at https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Releases#3.2.0_Beta_1.

and bug fixes.

These are source code downloads. For binaries ask your Linux distributor.
The source code is known to build and run with Linux (gcc, clang) and MS
Windows (msvc>=2013). Some binaries such as installers for Windows 64bit
are planned for the RC or stable version.

Changelog: https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Releases/3.2.0_Changes
Release schedule: https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Schedules#3.2.0
We would have one RC release within 30 days and then final 3.2.

Your feedback and support is welcome! https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Contact

Just a random idea, for any already reported bug it's OK to ping the team

vote for a bug on bugs.kde.org.

And reminder, new form of real-time contact is Telegram group, see

We're not supporting SQLite 2 anymore. But SQLite 3 was the default for

Hello,
Said that a bit too early. We are pausing the .AppImage releases (May
2017) with a plan to restart releases.
For that, volunteers for the AppImage creation are needed.
Details:

Update for you all, for your convenience:
On the https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Snapshots page the DOWNLOAD THE
LATEST VERSION link now leads to a kexi-latest-x86_64.AppImage file. It is
always updated newest available Kexi snapshot! E.g. today it's synonymous
to a kexi-git20170314-x86_64.AppImage version.

I am sure current Kexi master may be inferior on Mac to what you see on
Linux or Windows because it was not tested there at all. Nice to hear new
from Wojtek too...
One thing, the 3.0 branch for 3.0.x series is explicitly unsupported for
Mac - we're not changing it anymore for anything but more critical bugfixes.

The KDE's breeze-icons.rcc
is built by default now from breeze-icons.git (my patch was accepted).
Kexi's kexi_breeze.rcc is built in Kexi already the way you describe since
3.0.0. The same thing is used since 3.0.0 for KReport/KProperty. I
recommend using master branches for all the repos though.

All means are used to make Kexi work OK with stock Qt.

Good, thanks for reporting any issues in detail. bugs.kde.org is
preferred, and screenshots/videos help a lot. One good thing almost ready
for Windows that can be good for Mac too: KFileWidget would be optional so
native Open/Save dialogs (+KUrlRequester and a simple
QFileSystemModel-based list view) would be available for non-Plasma
platforms.

Yes and this is unfortunate, it's 8 months old software, months of
work is not distributed on this OS.
Despite of the fact that Kexi 2.9.x are all fix releases, with no
feature updates (one minor was in SQL), and Ubuntu had to offer such
updates, it does not.

This is why we need one or another way to give users ultimate option
to stay with their OS of choice and use fresh Kexi apps.

Can you please send a screenshot, long to documentation or a video?
All I see is that order is unspecified. I can reorder rows only for
spreadsheet mode, which is for example the one in Table Designer or
Query Designer. Data Table shows just that:

As long term MSA user I don't argue with anything you write here.

I just claim the feature costs many thousands, not an evening :)
If nobody can step up it would end up as a paid extension _if_ there's
market for it: someone has to hire developers that will deliver that.

Thanks Robert.
I recommend asking the Kubuntu team. It's they task to distribute properly...

I see how it may be usable. It's not supported now.
Database table is not a spreadsheet's sheet, so the order is defined
by current sorting, for given column, based on contents. Even if we
have this feature, placement of a new row would be kept until another
sorting or re-opening the table view. This my be the reason why I know
no software that supports the feature.

We have no wish reported for it. Please report if you like and vote.

Yes, it has been available for a long time. But table is recreated
then from scratch without prior data.
We're collecting funds for this big development:

It's unsupported like the above.

All this was long ago fixed.

My advice is to upgrade the OS or install another copy in a virtual
machine or different computer. Regardless of availability of the Snap
packages, staying with outdated software on LTS platforms will be always a
compromise. It's not a problem for apps that do not evolve much anymore but
Kexi is actively developed and users are hungry for features :)

We'll be looking for a way when practically every week new updates appear
for Kexi.

Of course physically creating table from scratch based on data the
user entered is trivial. The points you listed are similar to the ones
in the [1] wish.
It's even known how to get there:

Kexi 3 will be in separate repository and won't have too many
dependencies of KDE frameworks.
I do expect this will simplify preparation of binaries for most
popular OSes like Krita has, distributed alternatively. Maybe this
include some Linux packages -- contributions in this area is more than
welcome.

The goal is that user's will no longer be forced to stay with ancient
versions -- this isn't freedom :)

Hi Swarup,
Sending to the list - I can't reply privately.

I see what you mean. But resources for distributing the binaries are
not at the side of the Kexi project curently. Let's note that the idea
of "LTS" does not mean not long-term-support for apps that evolve
beyond security patches. LTS just effectively "freezes" access to the
updates.

https://userbase.kde.org/Calligra/Download should be updated by users of Ubuntu.
You can try to force your distributor to ship upgrade or reconsider using LTS.
Please always update the page if you care about users of this distro.

Shipping binaries in a custom repository ppa is a solution but someone
needs to do that every month again and again. And test, sometimes
backport.

This is Linux' Achilles' heel.
I don't know why one can need the LTS with its policies. Linux was
about freedom, now it seems that it's clearly more straighforward to
downgrade/upgrade Windows and still have access to (fresh Kexi soon).

Volunteers are welcome. Please spread the word.

[Kexi] Kexi 2.9.7 released

2015-09-03 Thread Jaroslaw Staniek
Hi!
Kexi 2.9.7 has been released.

Recommended because one important fix restores ability of altering table design.
This was serious regression present in Kexi 2.9.5 and 2.9.6 (bug 350457).

Otherwise, not many changes, expect more in 2.9.8. We're also focused
on the new shiny 3.0.

Meeting page: https://community.kde.org/Akademy/2014/Monday#Room_1_-_8_September

You'll hear what happened within the past 10 years, share opinions,
learn about possible areas of contribution (coding, testing,
documentation, software design, UX design, promo) and perhaps business
too. Kexi is a feature-packed software. It's the only FOSS and
Qt-friendly offering table, query and business reports designers. It
contains a kind of Qt Designer for data-aware forms. Javascript-based
scripting, web/cloud services are coming!

Hi, thanks for the contact.
Kexi 2.8 (the newer, the better, currently released is 2.8.5,

I hope this is the one you're reporting.

I mentioned Kubuntu but you're not forced to change desktop to Plasma

I do not know what version of Kexi it is, as I could not find an about

Look at the drop-down Help menu ? button near the top-right Search field:

Also, typing 'kexi --version' in console can disclose the info.

 Hi,

I'm new to KEXI and I have some weird problem with it.

I just compiled KEXI from source code on a 64bit Ubuntu 11.10. KEXI was the
only product I chose among other Calligra software.

I followed the instructions on the web pages of Calligra to compile and
 install KEXI.

After the installation I want to try it out. And I launched KEXI from
command line, created a new database file. I checked out the 'KEXI user base
wiki' web site to learn how to create a new table, which can be found at:
 http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook/Building_Simple_Databases/Designing_Database_Tables/The_Table_Designer_window
Then I noticed that KEXI was not working properly. When I was designing a
new table, the property editor of KEXI gave me a just blank view, nothing
(any options or buttons) could be found at that location of my window.

Hi Yaoyu,
This is a known bug fixed in Kexi 2.7.3:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=323804

So all you need is newer source code and compile it.

I am happy you're trying Kexi. Regards!

I just compiled KEXI from source code on a 64bit Ubuntu 11.10. KEXI was the
only product I chose among other Calligra software.

I followed the instructions on the web pages of Calligra to compile and
 install KEXI.

After the installation I want to try it out. And I launched KEXI from
command line, created a new database file. I checked out the 'KEXI user base
wiki' web site to learn how to create a new table, which can be found at:
 http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook/Building_Simple_Databases/Designing_Database_Tables/The_Table_Designer_window
Then I noticed that KEXI was not working properly. When I was designing a
new table, the property editor of KEXI gave me a just blank view, nothing
(any options or buttons) could be found at that location of my window. And
if I try out the 'Primary Key' button nothing happens and KEXI complained
about 'no primary key problem' when I tried to save a table. It seemed that
some functionality of KEXI just didn't work.

I attached a screen shot to illustrate the problem more clearly. If there is
need to post any other information to help you locate the problem just let
 me know.

It is the first time I post a message to this mailing list, sorry for the
 interruption. Any help is appreciated.

 Thanks in advance.

Hi tinnews,
By no means :) Discussions just informally moved to the forum:
http://forum.kde.org/kexi.
.. which is not synchronized. This decision has been made after we
observed that for many months people discussed on Kexi topics on the
forum while the mailing list was silent.

After the move, this list acts mostly as a target announcement - at
least for releases and links to some blogs.

There are many advantages of the forum, it's more available for mobile
access, and archives are easier to browse.

On the other hand, we share public development (non-user) list at
calligra-de...@kde.org with the entire Calligra project and this is
not going to migrate to a forum.

Oh, pity, I'm not going to go there I'm afraid.

After the move, this list acts mostly as a target announcement - at

There are many advantages of the forum, it's more available for mobile
access, and archives are easier to browse.

There are also many disadvantages, in particular:-

I have to go there, messages aren't delivered to me. I am on 60 or
more lists and browsing around the web to 60 or more different
 places just isn't practical.

I can't use a decent editor to create messages, not to mention that
each forum has a different interface and I have to learn that.

Pity, a two-way forum-list interface would be a nice contribution.
Until then personally I can only discuss in one public place and this
is actually a place where more users are gathered, which is actually
the forum :)

Dear All,
There's Invitation to Calligra Week of Polish:

The Calligra Week of Polish is a concentrated effort to remove all
the little misfeatures and discomforts that makes it less pleasurable
to use Calligra than it needs to be.

We have a strong focus on detail in Kexi to make using it a
pleasurable experience. It can be always improved so should you have
any bug or wish to report, please do so - any opinion is welcome and
will be noted. If you need discussion, you can do so on
forum.kde.org/kexi. If you prefer, go to the bugs.kde.org Bugtracking
System directly. Mail addicts can also send emails to kexi@kde.org.

We set the target for as many reports as possible to be published
between Saturday November 3rd 2012 and Saturday November 10th.

This way you're joining the Kexi Team with little effort!

 strictly flat-file.

 http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Tutorials says Relationships (feature not

I'm thinking, for instance, of the one-to-many relationship of author
 to books.

[..]

Hello Anne,
Thanks for your interest in Kexi :)

Kexi supports one-to-many relationships that can be defined in Table
Designer, I explain it here:

http://lists.kde.org/?t=12338548861r=1w=2

Once a combo box work in tabular view, you can assign the column to a
combo box widget in form and it'll automatically use the definition
made in Table Designer.

The info did not find its way to the Handbook
[http://userbase.kde.org/Kexi/Handbook] (but it finally should...).

Re: [Kexi] Can Kexi store formatted text (rich text) in a text field?

Hello Matt,
Text Editor is a from widget in Kexi, capable of editing a subset of HTML

The widget has Rich Text property, true by default. I just noticed it
accepts pasting rich text such as copied from a browser, unfortunately
it fails to save it, instead it converts the content to plain text. It
will be fixed in subsequent release (which will be 2.6.0 Beta 1).
You can store the HTML but it has to be entered or pasted in as HTML
text, not rich text. This way (after the fix) you'd be able to see the
resulting HTML.

We also do not have proper toolbar for actions [Bold], [Italic], etc.
This would have to be added too.

Another missing feature is displaying rich text in Tabular View.

Thanks for helping to locate the regression :)

[Kexi] Kexi mailing list is moving to forums

2012-04-23 Thread Jaroslaw Staniek
Hello,
Over many months the Kexi mailing list was silent with about two posts
every month [1], yet they were announcements from the Kexi Team.
So I'd like to propose to entirely move from this kexi@kde.org mailing
list to Kexi (web) forum hosted by our mother project, KDE:

http://forum.kde.org/kexi
(shortcut from Kexi web site also exists: http://kexi-project.org/forum)

== The Deadline ==
If no reasonable traffic appear on this mailing lists until May 23,
all users posting here after that date will be asked to repost on the
forum.

For those addicted to mailing lists: reading the forum exclusively via
email (and later maybe even writing?) would be possible if there are
requests for this feature. I personally use notifications for both
subforums and it is OK so far.

== Purpose of the Kexi forums ==
The forum was recently created for two purposes:
- discussions about Kexi, ideas, future developments
- general requests for help

Each purpose is handled by a dedicated sub-forum.

== Popularity ==
These forums are relatively active already, and much more active than
kexi@kde.org even was.
The extra advantage of the web forums is that once you have registered
account you can use the forum from any computer without accessing your
email.
Searching of the forum also seems to be easier.

PS: All other Calligra apps have either dedicated forum or general
'Calligra' forum can be used: http://forum.kde.org/viewforum.php?f=203

Unicode collation sequences for default Kexi (SQLite databases) is
what defines _distinction_ between 1. ease of use and ease of
deployment desktop db solutions and 2. complexity of server solutions
(powerfull but tuned by hand, fragile to changes).

I invested into a small research first at
[http://community.kde.org/Kexi/KexiDB/KexiDB_Drivers/SQLite] and now I
am closer to a final solution to fix bug
[https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=278411]. Since it's a bugfix,
I'd like to have allowed for 2.4.

For your information (and comments) I'd like to openly note things
relevant to the deployment side.
If you are interested, please read sections 'Ensuring Kexi is built
with capable version of libsqlite3' and 'How to deal with incapable
libsqlite3 versions?'.

http://community.kde.org/Kexi/KexiDB/KexiDB_Drivers/SQLite#Ensuring_Kexi_is_built_with_capable_version_of_libsqlite3
http://community.kde.org/Kexi/KexiDB/KexiDB_Drivers/SQLite#How_to_deal_with_incapable_libsqlite3_versions.3F

After I commit the solution let's be aware that on 'noncapable'
libsqlite3 cmake can refuse kexi from building 'thanks to' the
detailed checks I am adding.
So looking in advance the 'Alternative solution' for some distros (and
their versions) is to deliver copy of 'capable' libsqlite3,
non-conflicting with the 'system' one, before the distros catch up.
I am considering having a fallback copy of libsqlite3 code properly
configured in a 3rdparty/ directory of kexi, which would be compiled
_only_ if libsqlite3 is found in a proper version but is not 'capable'
to handle unicode collations. Dedicated warning would be displayed
too.

This effort also prepares ground for introducing other features that
require extensions, e.g. engine-side scripting or custom types. The
same will be done in Predicate libs
[http://community.kde.org/Predicate] that sooner or later will replace
KexiDB.

On the other hand it would be interesting to know from Roger (CC'd) or
other sqlite people what they think about enabling extensions by
default in libsqlite3. Some people building libsqlite3 may overlook
the fact that this option is disabled by default and thus any
extensions are also disabled.

Hello Agustin,
You can reuse your local MySQL service (i.e. MySQL Server, not MySQL
Embedded), just provide connection info (user, password) once - when
creating your first Kexi database.

acting as data source for Kexi visible as set of tables with
relationships in Kexi. The use cases covered: having direct access to

Small correction, by default Akonadi owns private instance of MySQL.
This configuration should be changed in order to share the instance.
No idea if this is worth the effort on modern machines if you do not
plan to directly reuse Akonadi data stored in the database.

 http://linfiniti.com/2011/11/more-on-qgis-desktop-web-fusion/

This is all very interesting. It would be possible to have proper
integration if we have any contributor in this area.
Even starting with small thing would make a difference. The one who is
interested would decide on the future shape of Kexi :)

You might be interested to read the first part, (if you have not seen
 this already).

 http://linfiniti.com/2011/11/fusing-web-technologies-with-qgis/

I believe a lot of QGIS users will be using Kexi if there is read and
write for sqlite3 files. Right now, they are looking for MS Access
 alternative that would with QGIS.

Here are my thoughts:
- we encouraged developers to start blending Kexi with maps [1], that
would be a starting point to the GIS world
- similarly to what has been mentioned in the context of QGIS, we want
to see good scripting features as a foundation 100s of plugins for
specialized use cases
- in the context of maps drawing custom overlays/layers is exactly
such application of script
- Qt allows to use javascript programming (build on familiar web
developer story) without a need for using WebKit browser even as a
component: the canvases (graphics contexts) can be entirely custom
- finally, if you wish to see non-trivial features for GIS in Kexi
Project, let's spread the word and we can organize the development in
2012 after Kexi 2.4 release; we clearly need you, with budget and time
since GIS, while interesting, is one of many areas in Kexi that need
investments. Joining forces can make a difference.

Kind of constructive idea, how about you and/or other GIS people help
in specifying detailed requirements and development plan for 'GIS in

So the feature can be implemented earlier...

We have received funds from Google for Maps in Kexi project this year

(See thread started by Swarup 24 March 2011) How to add a column to

My databases were created using Kexi 1. Would I be right in suspecting
that there are incompatibilities with these and Kexi 2 and that I
will have to create a new database using Kexi 2 ?

We can connect and view data in the main database table and queries but
the original data entry form is no-go. In Data view we get a page
layout of 'KexiDBAutoField's but no data. In Design view I see no
fields in the Property Editor and thus no way of assigning fields to
the display, or even of creating a new form.

The following is given in the Property Editor.
No datasource can be assigned for this widget
so it looks like it does not read from the existing.

 Hello Anne,
Support for AutoField widgets is the major visible change since Kexi 2.2.
Users have to remove them and insert text boxes and text labels instead.

If I drop a 'text box' onto the form then it crashes kexi which
 disappears totally.

Hi Anne,
Could you paste backtrace information, a list that appears in the
'crash' window afterwards?

Whether I look at my main postgresql database or one created in SqLite
  the situation is the same.

That's true, the incompatibility is withing forms so it's independent
 of the data source type.

We plan to have flexible layouts that would cover the use case of
 autofields better.

To make life easier for users of Kexi 1.x I just came to conclusion
that AutoFiels should be somehow 'imported' as labels+text boxes. It
would be for Kexi 2.4.1 or so.
