I am not saying you would need this tool. Because it targets more than
just Ubuntu, it may be better investment, maybe even better than using
Snaps. I did not test anything like that with Kexi though. You can
also: - build Kexi by hand on your computer - build Kexi and package
it (and share with others?) - use the https://build.opensuse.org/
service to do the same - ask someone else to make a package Finding
people that _regularly_ help with packaging Kexi will help the
project. Things will improve, just now the focus is on development of
the new shiny Kexi 3.

Yes, if you use a PPA specific to the program. You have to make sure

There are so many software packages which update regularly every week
with the Ubuntu update manager-- it happens automatically. If Kexi
could be incorporated into this feature, it would be great.
The updates are only bug and security fixes, there are no version
upgrades within a given Ubuntu release.
If there is a specific PPA you can get even daily evolutions . For

however this PPA is not prepared by Ubuntu people but by independent

Can you please send a screenshot, long to documentation or a video?
All I see is that order is unspecified. I can reorder rows only for
spreadsheet mode, which is for example the one in Table Designer or
Query Designer. Data Table shows just that:

As long term MSA user I don't argue with anything you write here.

I just claim the feature costs many thousands, not an evening :)
If nobody can step up it would end up as a paid extension _if_ there's
market for it: someone has to hire developers that will deliver that.

I see how it may be usable. It's not supported now.
Database table is not a spreadsheet's sheet, so the order is defined
by current sorting, for given column, based on contents. Even if we
have this feature, placement of a new row would be kept until another
sorting or re-opening the table view. This my be the reason why I know
no software that supports the feature.

MS Access has this feature, and has had it for many, many years. All the
features I asked about are long-held features of MS Access. I migrated
from Windows to Linux ten years ago and have been with Linux systems
ever since, but these features of MS Access are things I sorely miss. My
brother also works on Ubuntu on his Mac, and has installed Parallels
(virtual software) so he could install Windows, just so that he could
use MS Access.

-Ability to add columns to the middle of a table which is already in
existence

Yes, it has been available for a long time. But table is recreated
then from scratch without prior data.
We're collecting funds for this big development:
https://www.bountysource.com/issues/26881135-add-support-for-alter-table-s-design-without-losing-data
It it destroys all the data, the feature is of no use. Again, this has
been a standard feature of MSA for many, many years. One can do any sort
of manipulation of an MSA table: rearrange rows, rearrange columns,
rename columns, add new rows and columns in the middle of pre-existing
tables, highlight and copy-paste sections of the table and past it in
other sections of the table. The MSA table is so fluid and flexible. And
it is this very maneuverability that Liinux users still write about and
lament the loss of when they moved to Linux.

-Ability to change the name of a column in an existing table. (Currently
this requires going into the data view, with the warning that making any
changes will wipe out all the data in the table)

It's unsupported like the above.

-Ability to move existing rows/columns in a table which is already in
existence

This wish is reported, feel free to vote for it.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=361362

My intent here was not at all to rub Kexi's nose in the dirt; I know you
are working hard and I appreciate the progress you've made. I only
raised the subject as you said you'd never seen any DB software that has
the row-adding feature. In my mind, if I have to describe the ideal DB
software today though, it does still remain MSA. If you are able to
replicate the amazing features in MSA, you will have truly created an
amazing tool for Linux users.

This can be requested on an ubuntu forum.

Looks wonderful-- I am really looking forward to the day when
I'll be able to upgrade kexi versions. The version I have
right now is so dysfunctional. Any time the mouse crosses
from the left side of the screen into the left side of the
table, it makes the table jump to the top. This is endlessly
frustrating and a huge waste of time. Say I am working in row
#750, the mouse moves across the left border of the table and
all of a sudden the table jumps to row#1. If there is any fix
for this, please advise.

All this was long ago fixed.
My advice is to upgrade the OS or install another copy in a
virtual machine or different computer. Regardless of availability
of the Snap packages, staying with outdated software on LTS
platforms will be always a compromise. It's not a problem for
apps that do not evolve much anymore but Kexi is actively
developed and users are hungry for features :)

We'll be looking for a way when practically every week new
updates appear for Kexi.

There are so many software packages which update regularly every
week with the Ubuntu update manager-- it happens automatically. If
Kexi could be incorporated into this feature, it would be great.

OK. Do you mean official packages from Canonical or do you have
unofficial repositories added?

As for upgrading the OS, the Final Version of the new Ubuntu LTS
16.04 is coming out on April 21. My current LTS 14.04 is in all
other regards functioning wonderfully, and I would have no other
reason to upgrade given my own specific usage patterns and needs.
Upgrading would only be done for getting an updated Kexi, and for
me upgrading Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro is not a small job. So this
being the case, let me just ask the following questions:

I can't see updates for even new Ubuntu on this web page, 2.9.7 is too
old:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/kexi

Does this mean that 16.04 is going to install an old version of kexi?

Or are you saying you don't know what version of Kexi it will install?

 There's contact email kubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
 to the developers where yo
ucan ask for help.

But have you tried this advice?
http://www.askmetutorials.com/2016/02/install-calligra-office-suite-2911-on.html

Now this is very exciting indeed. I will definitely try this-- right now.

Do I need to first uninstall my existing version of Kexi? And if so, is
it ok to use the Ubuntu software manager to do the *uninstall *?

Or can I leave the current install in place and install 2.9.11 alongside it?

1. By upgrading to 16.04 LTS, will I get the latest finalized
version of Kexi? Or if not, which version of Kexi will be included
in Ubuntu 16.04?

2. Will the version of Kexi which is included have the following
features:

-Ability to add rows to the middle of a table which is already in
existence
-Ability to add columns to the middle of a table which is already
in existence
-Ability to change the name of a column in an existing table.
(Currently this requires going into the data view, with the
warning that making any changes will wipe out all the data in the
table)
-Ability to move existing rows/columns in a table which is already
in existence

Have these features not yet been developed then?

Thanks,

If these table features have also been incorporated, then that will also
provide tremendous inspiration to do the OS upgrade.

(If it is just the previously described table-jumps-to-row#1 bug which
has been fixed, I will still consider upgrading but I have adjusted
myself through long practice to this bug so that I don't cross that
table border when working in Kexi.)
