Just to emphasize something that Jon mentioned but is easily overlooked:

The icon must be authored in Inkscape.  It cannot be created in Illustrator
and saved to an SVG file for use in Inkscape.

The reason for this is that SVG files can be created in many different ways
that give the same visual look.  Some ways are straight-forward and some
are complex.  Illustrator does not attempt to make the SVG file reusable
and so its result is not easily modifiable and usually needs to be re-drawn
by another user in order to make changes.

Hi Markus,

Adding a new icon is certainly possible.  There are some guidelines here:
https://dev-docs.kicad.org/en/rules-guidelines/icon-design/

In particular, the icon must be added with an appropriate SVG source file
authored in Inkscape and with the appropriate (CC-BY-SA) license attribute
embedded in the file.
You can inspect any of the current icon source files to see what this looks
like.

software package, it would be troublesome to get it across the line on 
licencing, and how that licencing would be inclusive to other contributors.
i.e. would you accept someone to modify the logo to include a funny face, or a 
emoticon poo symbol or similar?  If it were my logo I would not want that, and 
hence would not want it to be licenced under an open source licence... I would 
want it to remain as a defensible trademark under an 'all rights reserved' 
licence.

Perhaps Wayne or the other Kicad members might have a different opinion on this 
(or legal advice contradicting my statements), but I think it would be 
something that 3d Connexion would likely want to have their legal team consider 
also.
