I'm using (2010-04-06 SVN 2508)-final. Before the net class setup was included in kicad I used to hack the .dsn file to achieve different track widths for different nets.
Just for testing I defined two net classes (power, signal) and routed a few parts using the internal autorouter. Both nets are falsely displayed with thin traces on my screen, but when I click on them the context menu displays the correct track widths. Manually routing the tracks works as expected and the widths are displayed correctly. The new net class definitions work correctly with freerouting.
