i am new to koha and have gone through the Using Koha as a Content
Management System steps so as to be able to add custom pages. My problem is
when I finished adding a custom page and try testing it i get the error 500.
On checking the logs, it says;

I am a new koha user here and I am having trouble printing out the barcodes
in the patron card creator. The problem is that the barcodes just do not
show up.
In my layout I have the box checked that says Print card number as barcode

Yes. There are several demo sites for Koha available here:

I believe these servers reset themselves to a default configuration daily
but they should give you a good idea of what Koha is capable of.
