For a little background on why US response might be, shall we say,
equivocal, it might be worthwhile to recall the Suez Crisis.
In the aftermath of this crisis (which left the brits broke enough
that James Bond was reduced to slumming in Deauville, and which left
the French developing their nuke grid), the US was left in the
position of being both:
(a) the major military power in the middle east, and
(b) the major dependent on (addict to?) middle eastern oil.
For those of you who do not immediately see the logistical vicious
cycle between (a) and (b), cf Сталинград and the outcome of
WWII.

Riding the tiger may be impressive; managing to climb down peacefully
afterwards would certainly be much more so.
