Yes, the requirements are the same in Canada for nav and strobe lights .(page
607 of the AC Spruce 2015 catalog I have)
Check Transport Canada documents under Chapter 549.
I have 2 strobes , one under the belly and one on top of the turtle deck, which
is one of the approved scenarios.

You can go into an unusual in a 172 if you're not careful! GPS has
definately made flight planning easier and safer. Just have a paper one
handy following and comparing the two.

Without at least a wing leveler, that's sure true. It's even worse with
the KR-1 cockpit. I used paper back in the 80's with my first KR so
clearly everyone did it.
It is much easier to use approved equipment but in the US getting something
allowed is less of a headache on homebuilts. Also after the initial
inspection you can add equipment as the mechanic and sign it off within
reason.
