There is a plug on the left side of the VW 2180 engine into the oil pan. 
This is intended for the oil temperature probe.  Ground is done through the 
pipe threads on the probe at the engine case.  You can also get oil 
temperature info by tapping into the oil line if you have a remote oil 
cooler; then you have to ground the probe because the oil lines and AN 
anodized fittings will electrically isolate the probe.

Just use the factory tapped pipe thread hole on the side of the oil pan as 
designed and get 'r flying.

I have a 100 deg to 260 deg F instrument panel meter but no oil temperature 
sensor. VW2180
Can I remove (unscrew) a plug on the bottom of the engine and screw in a oil 
temperature sensor? Also is one lead of the sensor grounded? Is there 
another way of getting oil temperature data? I could not find any info on 
this.
