Re: KRnet> Composition of a KR 2 with Subaru EA 81 engine

2022-04-05 Thread tinyauto--- via KRnet
You should sell the engine to a vintage Subaru collector.  I have a friend who
has been trying to piece an EA81 together and he says the parts are very
difficult to find.  Strike one!  Next to develop full power, the Subaru has to
turn too fast requiring a reduction.  I have a friend who rebuilt his Subaru
powered airplane 3 times and finally gave up.  I believe that to be common.
Strike two.  I know there was a Subaru engine aircraft conversion company that
sold engines.  Not real successful with that.  I know there aren't many Subarus
engines flying.  Strike three.  I think the engine can be made to fly but there
are better alternatives.  Good luck!

Wouldn't that make it worse?  The shorter the stick the less travel you have
for the same movement.  I would think if the stick was 3 foot tall it would be
better, but not practical.

My only suggestion would be to cut at least 3" off the stick.

Again.  Using the term "plexiglass" and "lexan" are brand names from the days
owned by GE.  The actual name is "acrylic"and "polycarbonate" and using this
you can buy several different brands of the product.  Often cheaper!  Acrylic
is clearer and tougher, but breaks easier.  Lean can be bent in a sheet metal
brake, but scratched easier and gasoline is not a friend.  Sent from my Samsung

2018-10-05 Thread tinyauto via KRnet
I had a friend who built several airplanes in his lifetime.  He HATED to fly.
He used aircraft construction as a way to satisfy a creative desire.  I think
there are a lot of people like that.  Not everyone likes to fly.  I had a
friend who wanted to fly so badly he went through many hours of training and
even bought a Taylorcraft flying it many hours.  Suddenly he put the Tcraft up
for sale and that was the last he flew.  Asking him what happened he said he
had to be honest with himself.  Flying scared him.  He thought with time the
fear would go awayit did not.  This may explain some issues of abandoned KR
aircraft.

Does anyone know if Great Plains Aircraft is still around? Issues? I’ve ordered

Two KR2 projects for sale health reasons.  One is retractable gear no

This is in response to some interest in a one piece wing. First and foremost,
do you have room to build a one piece wing? I figured if I had the room for a
super stretched KR2s I could build the wing in the same building. Some of the
questions were about transpiration. Trust me that was the least of my problems
on this project. It took about four hours to loud and unload fuselage and the
wing. Check out the pictures on my link.

Tim, Sounds like a fun project. I am one of those guys that think all KR's
are KR1s as they are just too small for a normal size American person. I
bought the KR1 plans several years ago and was planning to build with a small
inline engine like the Yamaha snowmobile engine and put fixed landing gear
under it like a RV3. I would like to see some photos as you go along.

Subject: KR> New KR-1 Builder Checking In

Well folks, after many years of dreaming and planning, I am finally working on
my KR-1!
I picked up a project from Portage, WI, and hauled it back here to OSH, where
I live and work at EAA. It is currently sitting in my garage on the retract
gear, with a HAPI conversion installed, and the foam and fiberglass had been
started, but was not acceptable. I have spent the past 2 weeks removing all the
foam and glass from the structure, so basically it is now in the boat stage
with center section. I also have the outer spars and aileron wood strips and
hinges, and most of the metal parts and pieces too, so it is a good start.
The previous builder had obviously seen Ron Scott's "Ol' Ironsides" airplane
which was based here in WI, or read the articles about it in Sport Aviation,
because it has fiberglass sheet for the sides and bottom instead of aircraft
plywood. EAA now has "Ol' Ironsides" in storage so I was able to look it over,
and it is the same construction exactly. I am just going to leave it, rather
than try to remove the fiberglass sheet down to the wood structure, which would
probably damage it beyond repair if I tried to remove it anyway.
I purchased a set of plans from Jeanette Rand back in 2009, so these might be
the last KR-1 plans that she personally sold. I will use the new airfoil, and
am pretty sure I will convert it to fixed gear. Any KR-1 flyers that have
actually used the retract gear and like it? I have read all the posts about it,
so if I do keep them I will change the latching system in some fashion.
My goal is to have the lightest KR-1 possible, using Ken Rand's original 310 lb
empty weight as my target. No starter, bare minimum equipment (have nav/strobes
though) and probably MGL instruments with a tablet and Icom A24 handheld radio.
Any advice, comments, and especially real-world experiences welcome!

Mark,
I chased this problem for several years after the first few years having no
issue. The easiest and most effective solution was just to simply tighten
the bottom pivot nut. Mine is tight to the point that the center return
springs just barely return it to center. In fact it may not return to center
if it is static sitting up off the ground. It does center in flight and it
does center during taxi operations.
Hope this helps
Joe

After several months (actually since late January) I flew N886MJ again
today. The new owner who lives near me had been doing several modifications
such as installing dual controls, adding a gascolator, installed a right
left fuel selector as in a Cessna, new brake masters and rebuilt front axle
and bearings and changed the fuel pumps to a parallel set up and some non
mechanical changes. Anyway, it was a great feeling to fly N886MJ again.
Everything the new owner did checked out good. The only problem was that on
landing the front wheel shimmied which it had never done before. We will be
taking the assembly apart and going through it to look for wear, etc. Any
ideas would be helpful. Like I said the previous 643 landings never even
produced a hint of a shimmy.

January 28, 2017, while attempting to return from a lunch fly-out at GED,
Georgetown, DE, he had an in-flight fire seconds after leaving the runway.
He set it back down on the same runway and jumped out of the Tri-Pacer
while
it was still rolling on the runway going about 30 miles per hour. He hit
the pavement on his feet, but slammed into the pavement face down. He
sustained a broken nose, broken bone on an eye socket, throat and lung
damage from inhaling smoke and flames, 1st and 2nd degree burns on his
face
and scalp. Appears he will recover from those injuries; long term damage
is
unknown. The Tri-pacer coasted to a stop in the grass next to the runway
fully engulfed in flames. About 2 acres of dry grass also burned before
the
fire department put it out. The white stuff is foam from putting out the
fire. I don't know any further info as to the cause.
Looks like the air-to-air photo shoot will need to wait a bit longer.

Well I must say Dennis is building very different from what is normally
seen. The photos bring up a lot of questions. You may have mentioned it
before, but is the sides of this fuselage fiberglass instead of plywood? Also
are the rib to spar shelf brackets temporary? Neat canopy. I am thinking
this guy has built things other than airplanes before. Great that he is
building in a basement just like me!! Probably shouldn't have invited him
to this group as it may corrupt him. I like that he has done so much
without feedback, that he is building trike gear, and that he is building the
best KR. A KR1.

The folding wing is a one man process: remove the pins, pull the wing
panel outboard (it is spring loaded) and rotate it to the rear.

It will fly with a 2si 70 hp two cycle water cooled engine. The
builder is this far along in just 13 months and hopes to be flying by
midsummer. I'm pushing him to make Lee Summitt but that will be a
stretch so to those attending, this will be your last chance for any

I encouraged Dennis to join the net so you may be able to e-mail him
